Fleet Financial Controller

To own and deliver robust and cost-effective finance support to Kier Fleet, working with the rest of Kier Group, Group Finance and the supply chain.


Kier Fleet provide vehicle services for business units and functions across the Kier Group.

Deliver proactive, efficient and effective financial management budgets, control and reporting to the Head of Fleet for the Kier Fleet operations and to the Group Financial Controller from a Finance functional perspective.

The applicant will need to champion the Fleet function within Kier and manage the Fleet finance team on a day-to-day basis.

It is also expected that the Fleet Financial Controller will deputise for the Fleet Administration Manager and / or the Director of Fleet when required.

The role is very hands on and requires a can do individual that thrives on working within a busy and demanding team environment, to ensure on time, on budget delivery.

The role will also require supplier management involved in all aspects of the Fleet service provision.


As Fleet Finance Controller, the key to success will be marrying the BAU reporting/governance/controls activities with understanding, challenging and driving business strategy as a business partner

Time needs to be spent as a business partner, in the business advising on strategy/business implications and providing insights to create value, and not just pulling and producing numbers.

You must be able to work to strict deadlines and can deliver high levels of service, both individually and through coaching, managing and leading the Fleet finance and administration team.

You should be able to lead, prioritise and communicate effectively and be a strong team player. You will also be responsible for managing the change agenda in Fleet Finance and contributing to the broader Fleet function as part of the Fleet senior leadership team.

It is imperative that you can follow standard operating procedures for the business, adhering to both Kier Group policies and statutory regulations.

You will be required to provide strong leadership for the Fleet finance team, effectively manage costs and budgets, deliver excellent customer service levels, and lead projects, or change initiatives, as required.

You will ideally have managed your own team previously, Fleet experience would be an advantage, but is not an essential prerequisite.

A highly motivated, proactive, can-do attitude is an essential requirement, as is the ability to deliver.

Professional finance qualification i.e. CIMA/ACCA/ACA crucial.


Identify business risks and ensuring rigorous financial controls.

Deliver process improvements, cost reductions and revenue enhancements.

Engage with the operations team and wider business to understand the 'story' behind the numbers and provide insights/robust challenge/advice

Compile key business metrics/KPI and report/advise management

Balance day to day finance activities with those of providing the Fleet Director with business partnering and advice on commercial decisions that support Kier as a whole

Work collaboratively with the Group Finance team on behalf of the Kier Fleet central function.

Ensure key (auditable) controls, audit and compliance requirements are in-place and met and policies and procedures are updated.

Ensure rebate/balance sheet reconciliations are done accurately and in timely manner

Oversee production and submission of quarterly VAT returns and annual Kier Fleet Services Limited statutory accounts

Assist/challenge contract pricing in relation to business needs and competitor pricing

Engage in benchmarking studies to establish areas of potential operational improvement

To support and work with the Group Internal Audit function regarding internal audit requirements and external auditors and Group Finance in relation to external audit requirements.

Assist management in the formulation of its overall strategic direction

Review the performance of competitors and report on key issues to management

Lead and motivate a small Fleet finance team.

Capture, monitor and report any risks or concerns to the Director of Fleet and Group Financial Controller.

Challenge costs and services from existing supply chain and recommend alternative strategies and / or suppliers where required.

Provide analysis detailing the costs of the vehicle lifecycle /operation.

Communicate clearly and succinctly the financial objectives and goals to the Fleet team in harmony with Fleet management team.

Communicate with other managers to share challenges and ideas, to create robust Fleet solutions. Drive innovation in service delivery, savings and performance.

Completion of regular team reviews and feedback in a timely and appropriate manner to promote clear expectations and employee engagement and development.

Identify training needs and deliver training, coaching and mentoring to team members to develop skills, efficiency and performance.

Financial modelling skills and a detailed understanding of financial forecasting is essential.

Ability to lead the change agenda.

Excellent communication (written and verbal) and influencing skills.

Confident and experienced at identifying issues for escalation and dealing with promptly to ensure satisfactory resolution.

Computer literate with experience in using Microsoft Office and highly proficient in Excel.

Knowledge of Oracle would be desirable.
