The British Geological Survey (BGS) is one of the world's leading and forward thinking environmental science institutes with a focus on both public good science for government and geoscientific research with industry and academia to understand earth and environmental processes. A vacancy has arisen for an enthusiastic Communications Manager to be based at the Lyell Centre in Edinburgh.
You will take on 2 main roles. The first will be Lyell Centre BGS Communications where you will be responsible for all areas of corporate and science communication for BGS within the Lyell Centre, working to the direction of both the Head of Communications for BGS and the BGS Lyell Centre Director. In addition you will be responsible for all forms of Lyell Centre communication including planning, external media relations, web content, public and community engagement events, education, internal communication, social media and reputation management issues together with the responsibility of liaising with Heriot-Watt University (HWU) communications and any communications-related joint ventures with HWU.
The second role will be working on the UK Geoenergy Observatories (UKGEOS), where you will be responsible for managing the communication activities of the UKGEOS project in Glasgow and Scotland, working to the direction of both the project communications manager and the science lead in Scotland. You will be responsible for taking the lead on the communication activities for the Glasgow Geothermal Energy Research Field Site (GGERFS). Working with the project team to develop consultation materials, organise events, carry our direct community and stakeholder engagement, act as the contact point for GGERFS, develop web content and coordinate the GGERFS education programme.
How to Apply
To apply for this post you will possess a degree in an appropriate subject or equivalent experience with a minimum 3 years relevant PR experience. In addition you should have the ability and confidence to approach and work with BGS scientists, identify news and work to tight deadlines and be able to communicate science in an easily accessible manner.
Depending on qualifications and experience, starting salary for the role will be £28,200 per annum to £30,600 per annum. Working hours will be 37 per week excluding lunch breaks. The role is fixed term until 31 March 2020.
