Principal Engineer

The role (Overview):
* Engage Solutions on the design, build and documentation of new solutions for new and existing clients, ensuring new systems conform to required standards
* Provide diagnosis and resolution of customer problems, engaging external support providers as necessary
* Ensure resolution of complex issues are recorded and fed back to the support team in an agreed format and stored in an accessible location
* Identify areas for improvement. Plan, agree and implement changes (following change control processes)
* Identify and track trends, ensuring resolutions are progressed and implemented following change control processes
* Follow best practice service management, with particular focus on Problem, Change Control and Configuration Management policies and processes
* Support the Solutions team in preparing costs and giving advice for Tech Refresh programs, ad-hoc projects and upgrades
* Act as a point of escalation for the engineering support team, engaging in problem management methodologies where appropriate. Carry out root cause analysis
* Provide formal technical reporting as requested
* Attend routine meetings with clients as appropriate, taking actions and feeding back progress * Attend technical supplier reviews to ensure that required standards are being met and that root cause analysis is carried through to a successful conclusion
* Engage suppliers routinely for resolution of issues as outlined in their support contracts
* Asist Support Manager with the review of support contracts for designated equipment and systems, highlighting potential risks & areas for improvement
* Ensure delivery of SLAs
* Undertake analysis of available performance data to derive trends, then identify and implement improvement where required
* Production of incident and investigation/root cause reports
* Maintain a secure working environment in line with the requirements of the Company IAMM Policy in order to protect individuals, information and Company assets

Skills and Experience:
Knowledge of digital video and audio broadcast technology and operational practices is essential for this role, as is experience with products that decode signals, manage, store and playout media, encode and transport for the broadcast industry.
* Knowledge of project work and methodologies, ideally gained through involvement in complex high profile projects in the broadcast sector
* Strong knowledge of networking and common protocols - Routers, switches, hubs, TCP/IP, FTP
* Strong knowledge of DVB encoding, multiplexing and distribution
* Strong knowledge of Multicast and IP video distribution
* Knowledge of: satellite distribution, down/up-linking etc / storage systems, RAID, performance and security / file based video formats, workflows and transcoding
* Experience in analysing log data
* Experience using file based delivery technology - i.e. Aspera and Signiant
* Proficient user of MS Office, Visio, MS Project
* Experience in working with virtualised environments
* Experience of Senior Management liaison and be familiar with presenting technical information to a variety of audiences
* Experience of Client liaison, including acting as a Technical rep with a Client's technical and non-technical staff
* A clear ability to multi-task in a complex dynamic environment with regularly changing priorities
* Ability to process and present complex statistical data in a clear and concise fashion for Senior Management consumption
* A strong belief in and commitment to structured and formalised approaches to documentation
* Strong ownership and sense of responsibility
* An understanding that the role of a technical specialist will occasionally require the flexibility to work out-of-hours and take ownership of service affecting issues until a satisfactory resolution is reached
* A commitment to knowledge sharing and cross skilling and a general appreciation of the need to eliminate single points of failure
* High levels of persuasion, persistence and determination, as well as the ability to influence and negotiate with people and present ideas and issues with authority
* Understanding and appreciation of a best practice service management approach
* Excellent communication and team working skills
* Outstanding attention to detail
* A degree or equivalent in a broadcast related engineering area, with experience working in a senior engineering role in a broadcast environment within the media services industry or with a premium broadcaster.
