About Owen Barry

Established over 70 years ago, Owen Barry are a traditional manufacturing company, specialising in sheepskin, leather & cowhide, outerwear, accessories, handbags & lifestyle products.

Even today everything is still manufactured in our own Somerset based factory. We are a family company, with a great heritage of fine quality craftsmanship.

Our long-term growth plan now requires the recruitment of a head designer who can help us create ranges that enhance the Owen Barry brand and help us to expand & grow further in the luxury area.

Over 50% of our production is already exported to very individual prestigious marketplaces, meaning several key collections must be created annually for each of these markets and product categories.

We are looking for a designer who can join our team; we are an exceptionally friendly, family business, we are passionate about our products and our staff (35 strong); we have been doing this for 70 years so we know that our whole team is the strength behind our success – would you like to join us ?

Company Designer – Outerwear & Accessories including Handbags.



Researching & keeping up to date with relevant lifestyle trends, product & colour trends. Reports from catwalks, store visits and industry trade shows, using websites, lifestyle blogs and social media. Support trend research with mood boards.

Design & Manufacture

Lead the design process with the creation of new product concepts in line with the company brand strategy.

Have a good understanding of the luxury leather & shearling garment and accessories market place, the construction, materials, the limitations and adaption for bulk production.

Planning and developing ranges, including special projects alongside the core range.

Develop sketches, patterns, and tech packs for sampling and production, specifying construction details & materials.

Producing & grading patterns that are cut and sewn into sample garments and supervising the creation of these, including fitting, detailing, improvements and adaptations.

Working with the sampling team to ensure the timely manufacture of prototypes and photo samples.

Maintain an organised library of design development, patterns, materials, resources, & samples.

Working within and upholding the development/manufacturing/sales calendar (critical path)

Team Player

Working with others in OB team, to develop products to meet a customer brief discussing and identifying new product opportunities.

Liaising closely with sales & production teams on an ongoing basis to ensure understanding of the OB brand, customer, market requirements and price points.

The skills to communicate and inspire the sales & marketing team regarding the essence, features and strengths of the designs

Working with the buying team in the sourcing, selecting and buying skins, fabrics, trims, fastenings and embellishments

Working with the marketing manager regarding content and inspiration


You will need to show:

  • PC/Mac literate – Fluent in Adobe suite
  • Experience in outerwear & accessories design
  • creativity, innovation and flair
  • an eye for colour, materials, execution and finish.
  • the ability to generate ideas and concepts
  • design and visualisation skills, either by hand or through computer-aided design
  • technical skills, including pattern cutting and grading
