I have an exciting opportunity for an Product Development Engineer to join a global leader in the design and manufacture of electronic instruments within medical devices, telecommunications, optical communications, defence and scientific sectors.

Currently, the company is a combination of low volume development orders combined with an increasing number of new products entering into running manufacture following qualification in customer’s products. This Scottish business is continuing to grow and is ramping up production with a move to a new facility in the coming year.

The role sits within the Product Development Team and will involve contribution at all product development stages from identifying customer and market requirements through to introduction into production and subsequent support. The team is also involved in other technical activities in support of sales and marketing. The role is based in Dunfermline and will report directly to the Engineering Manager; this is a key function within the business and offers an exciting challenge for an ambitious individual.

Key areas of responsibility will include:

  • Analysis of customer requirements and generation of product specifications
  • Design and test of optical components and systems, optical system modelling
  • Optimisation of design for performance and manufacturability
  • Development of software tools for product design and test analysis
  • Transfer of new products into production
  • Subsequent support to production and customer

This opportunity will suit individuals with industry experience or also recent graduates with a relevant technical expertise in the following areas:

Design and modelling of optical elements using numerical and mathematical design tools.

Paraxial design, Gaussian beam propagation, diffraction analysis.

Numerical analysis of data for performance modelling and optimisation using tools such as Matlab/Python/C++ or similar.

Development of automated data processing tools.

Experience in OO design and UML desirable.
