Database Developer / DBA – Permanent

Location: London

Start Date: ASAP

Rate: £60,000 - £70,000 per annum

NST are currently recruiting for a Database Developer / DBA to work for a Global Entertainment Company. They have operational centres in London and New York that provide shared ‘back office’ services, including Operations, Finance and IT to the company. They are a friendly, ‘family’ and very relaxed working environment (typical of the media / entertainments industry) - around 200 employees in total, supported by small IT and Web Development teams.

Over the last 3 years, they have been undertaking a transformation of their core systems to cloud-based technologies, to adapt to an explosion in data volumes. They are building new “green-field” systems, using latest generation technologies to develop innovative solutions that they believe are the most effective for the business.

At the core of this is a steadily growing footprint at AWS, where they host a number of data stores (transactional and warehouse data - Amazon RedShift, master data – RDSPostGreSQL, files – S3). These are partnered with EC2 instances to host the browser-based, front-end applications and connected to MuleSoft CloudHub for integration. They primarily use these AWS services for master data management and for the processing, storage and analysis of daily, weekly and monthly reports.

This program of work is powered by a very small Development team, which they are seeking to expand. The successful candidate will work with the Data Architect to deliver and maintain the database layer of their business-critical systems.

Given the size of the team, we need an individual who is highly flexible, and prepared to ‘muck in’ with the team to handle a varied workload. That said, we would be looking for a 50:50 Developer/DBA split as follows:

The company has a number of ongoing projects that are ‘database development’ heavy, including:

  • The database developer will primarily be responsible for delivery of database system components (e.g. tables, views, functions/stored procedures, seed scripts), working closely with the web application developer.
  • Analytics: the warehousing of transactional data to meet ever growing business needs for up-to-date analysis. The warehouse will be made available to the business via Tableau Server. The database developer will be involved in the definition of warehousing and aggregation strategies, taking direction from the Data Architect.

DBA (including DevOps and Operational Support)

The ‘DBA’ element of the role covers responsibility for the administration of the RedShift and PostGres servers, including:

  • Version control and release management
  • Linux-based shell scripting for task and deployment automation
  • Infrastructure and security upgrades and patches
  • Database monitoring and performance tuning
  • Access controls and security management
  • Back-ups and disaster recovery
  • Servicing scheduled and ad hoc requests from the business (e.g. extracts, one-off reports)
  • Trouble-shooting business issues that arise from day-to-day sales processing (e.g. issues with files received, processing of adjustments to files)
  • Trouble-shooting technical issues that arise in daily scheduled processes

Must Haves

  • 5+ years of experience of SQL and procedural SQL
  • 2+ years of experience of Amazon RedShift administration and development.
  • 5+ years of experience of relational database administration and development (e.g. Oracle, MS SQL Server.)
  • Confident in the use of version control tools, preferably git.
  • Skilled in release versioning and deployment, including database components.
  • History of delivering complex database components for successful business systems.
  • An eye for elegant and efficient designs / solutions that meet today’s business needs within a forward-thinking framework.
  • Ability to ‘work it out’ from loosely defined business requirements, working collaboratively in a very small Dev team (4 team members in total) and within the architecture and vision defined by the Data Architect.
  • Strong work ethic, self-motivated, able to self-direct, positive ‘can do’ attitude.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Highly desirable

  • Experience of SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) and MS SQL Server 2008-2016
  • 2+ years’ experience of Linux-based shell scripting
  • Exposure to ‘big data’ strategies and technologies
  • Some Tableau experience would be very beneficial.
