Based in Livingston, ESS Holdings client comprises of a group of European companies engaged in the design, development, manufacture and distribution of analytical systems, life science equipment and laboratory instruments with operations dating back to 1920. Now part of a global multinational business, they are setting up and looking to aggressively expand a new research and development operation based from Scotland, supporting group companies and product families across Europe and Asia.

Reporting into the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will be an integral part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team, developing new technologies, product families, redesign of existing products, and solving complex problems associated with current products. In this role you will contribute to the development and testing of scientific instrumentation and laboratory products. The role will require the ability to fit in well as part of a team, whilst also being capable of working independently.

Work activities will include:
  • Design, assembly and testing of prototype mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Producing 2D technical drawings and 3D CAD models.
  • Writing supporting technical documentation.
The relevant candidate can demonstrate:
  • Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience in a product development environment within a relevant industry having gained knowledge and experience of systems such as:
    • o Stepper motor, servo motor or linear encoder driven positioning systems.
    • o Temperature sensing and control systems.
    • o Integration of Human Machine Interface modules.
    • o Optical based products requiring precision alignment of optical components (mirrors, lens, filters and fibres).
    • o Sheet metal and plastic product casings.
  • Ideally a Solidworks user, with the ability to produce 3D models, detailed 2D component drawings (including dimensioning and tolerancing), assembly drawings, parts lists, and be capable of utilising PDM.
  • Experience in designing and developing components fabricated from materials and techniques such as:
    • o Sheet metal
    • o Welded fabrications
    • o Precision machined components
    • o Injection moulding
    • o Aluminium extrusion
  • Practical mechanical engineering skills, including modification and assembly of prototype components.
