The Geography Academics Advance program will develop the professional and life skills you have over 2 years before you obtain your QTS and a permanent Geography Teacher role with the school.
This course is designed to offer graduate trainees an opportunity to understand and meet all items outlined in the Teachers' Standards over 2 years. It is set out in a manner that we hope challenges and excites student teachers.
There are many routes into teaching but the retention rates are highest through avenues where students are offered in-school training and allowed to develop at an appropriate pace. Our course is built with this in mind.
In your first year you will start as a teaching assistant watching a variety of practitioners and assisting different classes and beginning your professional development. In your second year you will take on the role of a classroom teacher with the aim of becoming a qualified teacher at the end of that year.
Teacher training courses are all designed to guide you towards meeting the Teachers' Standards. Below are the study areas you can expect to cover over your two year course as you prepare to evidence your experience and gain Qualified Teacher Status.
Your course will be comprised of professional development and curriculum modules. We do not separate these areas of study as they can be very much intertwined at the early stages. Each term will have a primary focus but will also be supplemented with other elements appropriate to each teaching assistant's school context and personal development journey.
Throughout the course, student teachers are expected to keep a reflective journal in any format they so wish: typed, written, or via audio or video. All students on this pathway will also complete introductory sessions on being an effective teaching assistant.
