We are looking for experienced Midwives to complement our existing team of Hospital Based Midwives. We would welcome applications from midwives who are proficient in actively promoting, facilitating and supporting normality in childbirth. We are looking for dynamic, inspirational midwives to transfer their existing skills and interests to our unit. Midwives that join our core team are rotated between delivery suite and the antenatal / post natal wards throughout the year. Additional rotations to the Day assessment unit and community are available on an individual basis as part of your professional development.
Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust facilitates care to over 9,000 mothers and their babies every year. We have two busy obstetric units; one on the Queen Elizabeth, Woolwich site and the other on the Lewisham site. A beautiful co-aligned Birth Centre on the Lewisham Site has won the hearts of the local population The Greenwich Birth Centre opened on the Queen Elizabeth site in April 2015 and now has well over 1000 births.
The merger of these two Trusts enabled us to appoint to some very exciting posts within the Trust with strong clinical leadership. Our Consultant midwives are working to increase our normal birth rates and further reduce our Caesarean sections rates. This approach includes the promotion of facilities to support normality such as the home from home room, birthing pools, and the use of telemetry within the obstetric units.
Our whole midwifery service is exciting and innovative and we are part of a multi award winning team. So far this year we have been shortlisted for 3 BJM awards, for Peer Support for Improving Breastfeeding, Student Midwife of the year and Contribution to Midwifery Education. In 2017 we had 1 student nominated for student midwife of the year and a midwife nominated for Mentor of the year. We are very proud to have received both the 2016 RCM awards for Midwifery Service of the Year and the RCM Public Health Award. Also in 2016 with support from our fantastic mentors, one of our 3rd year students achieved BJM Student midwife of the year. In November 2016 we received official accreditation of being a Baby Friendly Unit at QEW and replicated this at UHL last year. Our cross-site Supervisory team also won the Supervisor of Midwives Team of the year from the LSA in 2015 and we have received a CQC rating of ‘Good’ in maternity! Our services aim to meet the needs of our local population and we regularly engages with service users to achieve this. We are currently involved in Transformation projects with the aim to further improve our services and be responsive to the needs of the local population. As an experienced midwife new to the Trust you could contribute to these with your ideas and by transferring previous experience and developing them to our service. Examples of our innovative projects include the exploration of Outpatient Propess Induction of Labour and Enhanced Recovery. We have set up pregnancy plus clinics in partnership with a weight loss company to promote healthy eating for life.
Our diverse client population provides us with constant challenges and we strive to deliver the highest standard of care. We have considerable expertise at caring for women with complex and high risk needs and our specialist midwives consistently provide the highest standard of multi agency care. Our Day Assessment Units have a reputation within the community of delivering high quality, evidence based care. These services have been developed over the years and are led by a team with a passion for facilitating care to women who require additional care during their pregnancies. The team boasts one of the few midwife prescribers in London. Our midwives are actively involved in the specialist clinics including Mental Health, Haemoglobinopathy, HIV, VBAC, Diabetes and Alcohol &Substance Misuse. Excellent learning opportunities are available both in the Trust and close links with the University of Greenwich and Kings College London further enables continuing professional development. Mentor preparation is considered essential development to facilitate students in achieving the skills required to become the midwives of tomorrow.
