You will gain experience and advance your skills across wards with some of the best outcomes in the UK that specialise in the care of surgical patients who have had some of the following procedures:• general surgical procedures such as a hernia repair and laparascopic cholecystectomy which is a surgical procedure to remove the gall bladder using key hole surgery• bariatric – surgical procedure to reduce the size of the stomach or remove a portion of the stomach• colorectal - surgical treatment of diseases of the colon and rectum • upper gastro-intestinal – for the treatment of diseases of the gall bladder, oesophagus and stomach Your general nursing role will provide you with great experience across the following surgical areas: Paterson ward – a busy 14 bedded ward which will enable you to become skilled at prioritising, organising and caring for surgical patients. Charles Pannett ward - specialises in caring for patients with bowel and upper gastro-intestinal conditions including cancer.Surgical innovation centre recovery area – connected to the Paterson ward. The centre is renowned for being a first in the UK to take up the Da Vinci robotic programme. It is also the UKs leading centre for bariatric surgery such as gastric bypass.SAU (Surgical Assessment Unit) - is a 23 hour stay ambulatory unit with trolleys that assess surgical patients mainly from A&E, the urgent care centre or GP referral.Your training will be further enhanced by the support of a clinical practice educator who will give you one to one coaching and training on how to plan and prioritise care, bladder scanning and nasogastric tube placement. You will also receive training to become fully proficient on nurse led discharge.If you are keen to progress you can do further training in clinical skills, leadership workshops, nurse in charge competency development, a preceptor course, phlebotomy and cannulation training. You will also have regular opportunities to learn from consultant led teaching sessions from different specialities. At our Trust you can achieve extraordinary things with extraordinary people.
