Radiotherapy Treatment Advanced PractitionerGrade: Band 7Department: Radiotherapy Care Group: Planned CareLocation: Reading and BracknellAccountable to: Radiotherapy Services ManagerLiaises with: Clinical Oncologists, Radiographers, Physics staffand all other staff in the Berkshire Cancer CentreJob SummaryTo plan and /or deliver accurate radiotherapy treatment.Be recognised and accessible as an expert in their specified field of radiotherapy, continuously developing clinical practice, giving expert advice and disseminating knowledge to the profession and to a wider health care arena.Use expert knowledge to identify gaps in the evidence base, making a critical analysis of new evidence and its relevance, and contribute to this evidence base by participating in high quality audit and research programmes.To use highly developed communication skills to support patients and carers in informed decision making about their care.To be involved in the development of Radiotherapy Services.To work flexibly between 7am and 10pm as required to meet the needs of the service.To work flexible to include weekend working as required to meet the needs of the service.
Clinical Duties Have specialist/expert knowledge on all aspects of the treatments administered in the department and to provide support and expert advice on treatment techniques. This includes specialised knowledge on the implications of treatment for the patients, providing specialist support for patients.Have specialist knowledge on the verification of 2D and 3D treatment methodologies including the evaluation and approval of verification images.With Band 8 Radiographers, review treatment sheets and identify patients requiring clinical support, liaising with appropriate Multi-disciplinary (MDT) members, to provide this support.Ensure accurate delivery of treatment prescriptions by appropriate delegation of duties to staff, by checking prescriptions and to ensure that extra supervisory support is organised where necessary.Maintain knowledge of radiotherapy clinical trials and research taking place within the department and how radiographers role within them.Ensure treatment prescriptions are annotated and completed correctly and any inaccuracies reported immediately.Inform medical staff of changes in patient condition, feasibility of the treatment prescription and treatment difficulties, and be available to discuss treatment problems with clinicians and the MDT.Be involved in the introduction of new equipment and associated staff training.Develop and maintain theoretical knowledge and skills in the use of existing and new equipment, techniques and procedures.Encourage, motivate and train staff in your specialised area.Participate in the emergency on-call rota.Accurately administer all specialist treatments requiring highly developed physical skills in order to provide highly precise accurate treatments, ensuring all QA protocols are adhered to.Use specialist knowledge to make clinical judgements whilst adhering to clinical protocols and giving consideration to complex factors, such as validity/safety/ accuracy of treatment (in relation to technique, patient etc) Effectively communicate decisions to the other members of the multidisciplinary team using good negotiation skills to reach an appropriate compromise enabling the best outcome for the patient.
