Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust
Consultant in Haematology

Applications are invited for the post of consultant in haematology to join a well-established and cohesive Macmillan Haematology Unit at Northampton General Hospital (NGH) NHS Trust. The post is a substantive replacement appointment due to relocation. The department provides a comprehensive clinical and laboratory haematology service for the acute trust and primary care and manages inpatients with a full range of haematological conditions to BCSH Level 2b (2010). The department has been accredited for autologous transplantation by JACIE.
The trust is a cancer centre and is part of the East Midlands Cancer Clinical Network. The department is a haemophilia centre, linked to Oxford for haemophilia comprehensive care. This is a general haematology post, but one which will provide opportunities for further limited sub-specialisation tailored to the special interest of the successful applicant and the clinical service requirements. An interest in haemostasis and thrombosis and/or haematological malignancy would be welcomed. The post is a full-time 10PA post with a 1:4 on-call commitment. The consultant haematologists deliver care across primary and secondary care and are supported by a high functioning team, including 2 specialist registrars, 3 FY/CT trainees, a team of specialist nurses in the haematology clinic and day unit and 5 WTEclinical nurse specialists (1 WTE lymphoma CNS, 1 WTE myeloma/leukaemia CNS, 0.6 WTE transplant CNS, 0.6 WTE haemoglobinopathy CNS and 1.8 WTE blood transfusion CNSs). There is excellent laboratory support and a team of anticoagulant nurses. There are specialist inpatient facilities (28 beds, including 12 side-rooms and 4 HEPA-filtered rooms) for haematology/oncology, adjacent to the haematology clinic and laboratory areas; junior doctor cover is provided for this ward as part of a specific rota for this specialist area.
NGH NHS Trust is a large (750 beds) district hospital providing a full range of acute services for a population of around 380,000. A new building housing an interventional cardiology centre, an inpatient renal unit, and the nuclear medicine / nuclear cardiology department was opened in 2008 and a new day surgery facility opened in 2012. The Macmillan Haematology Unit was extended and completely refurbished in a joint project funded by Macmillan and NGH NHS Trust, opening in 2012. The oncology chemotherapy unit has also completed refurbishment this year.
The county is part of a designated growth area, and will see significant development and consequent population growth over the next 25 years. Northampton has a distinguished heritage and is one of the fastest growing commercial towns in the UK. There is easy access to London and the Midlands through road and rail networks.
Informal enquiries about the post may be made to any of the consultant haematologists; Dr Angela Bowen, Dr Jane Parker, Dr Sajjan Mittal, and Dr Alistair McGrann on 01604 523261. Dr Guy Faust, Clinical Director and Mr James Rogers, Directorate Manager would welcome initial informal enquiries on 01604 523798 and 01604 523528 respectively.
