ROLE TITLE:Registered NurseREPORTING TO:Ward Managers

Overall Purpose of Role (Summary)Regularly act as ward co-ordinator on an internal rotation basis to ensure a high quality of care is maintained. Work as an effective team member by taking responsibility for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the day-to-day care provided to patients.

Communication/Customer Service and Team working
Performance Standard

Communicate appropriately with a range of people in a manner that is consistent with relevant legislation, policies and procedures

Work co-operatively within a team and ensure effective communication is actively encouraged between all disciplines.

Keep accurate and complete records consistent with legislation, policies and procedures in line with the NMC Code of Conduct.
Whenever necessary assert professional viewpoint acting as the patient's advocate in line with the NMC Code of Conduct

2. Planning and Organising
Performance Standard

Demonstrate the ability to manage own and others workload effectively.

Effectively deal with unplanned events which may impact on the smooth running of the shift

3. Managing - People and Resources
Performance Standard

Demonstrate the ability to manage the ward effectively, dealing with unexpected issues e.g. sickness.

Delegate staff according to skill mix, work load and patient dependency

4. Training and Teaching
Performance Standard

Act as a mentor to students, both pre and post registration, and new staff.

Ensure own knowledge, skills and expertise are up to date.
Provide formal written feedback/presentation of learning gained from a study day or visit which would benefit the whole team.

Take responsibility for own educational and development needs in line with Knowledge and Skills Framework

Ensure new and junior staff are assessed as competent before undertaking enhanced roles e.g. venupuncture, oral drug administration, etc.

5. Research/Innovation and development
Performance Standard

Actively support research and audit.

6. Patient Care
Performance Standard

Provide a high standard of evidence-based care to patients in line with hospital policies and procedures.

Have day-to-day responsibility for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care provided to patients.

Support the nurse in charge in the delivery of nursing care.

7. Service Development
Performance Standard

To have an understanding of the research processes keeping up to date with new advances in technology and NICE Guidelines that directly affect clinical practice and care delivery in radiology.

Participate in data collection for local audit and research projects ensuring consistency of information and documentation.

Be objective during the change process, taking an active part in determining its method of implementation and evaluation.

Support the Sister and colleagues during times of change and know when to ask for clarification of new guidelines and how they should be implemented.

Contribute ideas and knowledge learnt to the development of nursing practice in the department enabling staff progression and improved patient care.

Acts in a manner that respects customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and leads by example as a professional and accountable member of the radiology team.

To have knowledge of hospital policy relating to equality and diversity.

Be aware of factors affecting a multicultural team and take action to rectify that which compromises individuals or the team.

To report any area of concern to the Senior Nurse.
The job description will be reviewed annually and may be amended after discussion with the post holder.
This job description is intended as a guide to the main responsibilities of the post, and the post holder will be required to undertake such duties appropriate to the position as may be required by the Manager to ensure the smooth running of the service.
Infection Control

Apply standard precautions for infection control, using a series of interventions that minimise or prevent cross infection, including effective hand washing/cleansing when appropriate, particularly on entering and leaving clinical areas and between each patient

Use of personal protective clothing and additional protective equipment when appropriate. Strict adherence to Trust guidelines on collecting and handling of clinical specimens.
Health and Safety

Within their own area of responsibility, the post holder will be responsible for assessing the risks to the health and safety of staff, patients and visitors or to the achievement of the Trust's objectives. The post holder must ensure that identified risks are reported so that significant clinical and non-clinical risks are included in the Hospital's Risk Register. The post holder will participate, as required, in clinical and non-clinical audit projects aimed at improving patient care and the effective and efficient delivery of service.

Clinical Governance (clinical staff only)

The post holder will be accountable for continuously improving the quality of their services and safeguarding high standards of care, and contribute to creating an environment in which clinical excellence will flourish.
