Junior Data Scientist Development Post 24,856 - 34,473 with the possibility of a Recruitment & RetentionAllowance of up to 6,000 At the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO), we keep the marineindustries and the armed forces safe. As such, we are currently undergoing a period of transformationin which we are becoming more data-focused by utilising data sciencetechniques, and we therefore have both a junior and a senior opportunityto join the team. Whether you are new to the field of data science, or you are moreexperienced and are seeking to develop your knowledge, we have capacityfor innovative thinkers to join our numbers. In both of thesefascinating roles, you will predominantly be tasked with computerprogramming and pre-analysis problem-solving, coming up with innovativesolutions that will help us to identify and shape possibilities thatwill ultimately be used to enhance the potential of UKHO. In the seniorrole, you will have the confidence to lead on collaborative projectswith external partners, taking on a variety of interesting big data/machine learning challenges involving data from ship tracking, plusoceanographic and satellite data. In the junior role, you will beexposed to real challenges, but you will also have plenty of support tohelp you develop the requisite skills to eventually work independently.In both roles you will review technical scientific papers, furtheringyour understanding of scientific, big data, and data sciencedisciplines, and you will forge contacts with those in relevant fieldsand academia, plus the private and public sectors. These are fascinating opportunities to be involved in the type of workthat ultimately saves lives and shapes our understanding of the planet.As such, you will be a team-player who is keen to share knowledge withyour colleagues. For the junior role, you will therefore be degree-qualified inmathematics/statistics, or in a scientific or engineering discipline, orrelevant data science or data analysis experience plus be able toprogramme in either SQL, R, Python, Matlab or Scala. For the senior role, it is essential that you hold a degree withinmathematics/statistics, or in a scientific or engineering discipline,however it would be desirable if you held a Msc or Phd within thesedisciplines. We would again require you to have relevant data science ordata analysis experience, plus have advanced knowledge of SQL, R,Python, Matlab or Scala. If you have experience of processing geospatial, marine oroceanographic data that would be beneficial, but it is more crucial thatyou have a good grasp of designing and implementing machine learningpipelines. For both roles, you will be passionate about learning anddeveloping your grasp of this detailed arena.
