Our client has an opportunity for an experienced Lawyer / Barrister to take on a key legal role working directly with the UK businesses.

Job Purpose
-You will have primary responsibility for supply and procurement contracts and dispute management within the UK business. The focus of the role will be on contract drafting and related negotiations (generally in the context of capital expenditure projects and also the provision of contracting services to customers) and also managing litigation and dispute resolution.
-Management of a number of key internal and external individual and/or departmental senior stakeholder relationships.
-Driving the strategy for addressing /managing legal risks in a commercial and solution oriented manner in defined areas of the business and within a leading UK legal department.

Main responsibilities
The role will include:
-Leading the review and negotiation of procurement contracts for goods and services acquired by the business. Particular emphasis will be on capital expenditure / construction contracts for the installation, repair and maintenance of industrial fixed plant, machinery and for ground works. This work will comprise working with bespoke in-house template contracts and also, working with standard construction industry forms (NEC, FIDIC, IchemE etc) and managing specialist external counsel as support when required.
-Leading the review and negotiation of supply contracts, working with our business, engineering and purchasing teams. This will include focus on customer supply contracts for the Hanson business divisions specialising in highway construction works and building contractors, to advise the business on the degree of risk within their contracts.
-Responsible for all legal aspects of dispute resolution within the business, ranging from supplier/ contractor claims to legacy Hanson Plc international (US) litigation.
-Maintaining a suite of template contracts and adapting them to commercial business needs from time to time.
-Being a credible and trusted adviser to the business, capable of providing support in a commercial, solution-oriented, strategic manner and capable of identifying key risks to the business.
-Have the ability to build strong relationships at all levels of the business through objective and impartial advice with great legal and commercial insight.
-Providing legal updates and training to colleagues and the business as applicable.
-Providing creative solutions with excellent legal technical expertise and a strong focus and application of sound commercial acumen.
-Being recognised as the owner of certain key senior stakeholder relationships and maintaining an effective network of business leaders both within and outside the organisation. Ensure alignment and a strong working relationship with business colleagues and their areas of the business as a member of the Hanson UK Legal Team.

Desired Skills and Experience
What we need from you
-Be a qualified English law solicitor with post-qualification construction contracts law (drafting) experience. Disputes experience whilst not essential, is an advantage. Private practice lawyers considering a first move in-house also considered.
-Trained with and/or worked for a reputable national/international law firm in England as a solicitor.
-Have recent transactional experience within the UK construction market
-Have specialist transactional and/or litigation legal knowledge.
-Be capable of instructing and manage external lawyers in accordance with agreed budgets and manage the wider relationship interfaces on all areas of law relevant to the role.
-Maximise opportunities for providing legal support to the business in person and be prepared to travel both within and outside the UK for the role.
-Be a commercially focused, innovative and aware solutions provider.
-Be enthusiastic, energetic, and positive in approach, confident, resilient, adaptable and organised.

Additional information
This role is primarily based at the our client's headquarters in Maidenhead, Berkshire which is well connected with Thames valley and also with fast daily trains into West London (Paddington). However they will also consider candidates with relevant experience who wish to be based at their Bedford or Leicestershire offices, with some travel to Maidenhead required.
This is a permanent position. They will consider candidates with relevant experience who wish to work on a part time basis (minimum 4 day week)
