Vehicle Engineer (rail rolling stock) systems engineering management - on going contract based in Derby ££ neg

Job Content Specifications

Purpose of the job
To develop, document and validate rail vehicle level concepts and architectures, using system engineering processes and tools to meet all customer regulatory and internal requirements for the train. The role will be responsible for managing vehicle level requirements associated with train design, ensuring that the train systems are correctly integrated in order that the train achieves the required level performance and functionality.

Key responsibilities and challenges
Reviewing customer technical specifications and legislation to understand the requirements and consequently derive requirements and make key decisions regarding vehicle concepts and architecture to ensure requirements are achieved. This is to be conducted using of best practice System Engineering processes and tools.
Creating and managing the vehicle level technical documentation to develop and track the design through concept phase to train acceptance e.g. Descriptive Bill of Materials, Concept documents, System Interface Agreement, Customer Compliance Evidence. Leading and resolving technical issues relating to the achievement of the overall train design.
Ensuring the integrity and fidelity of the developing design by; structuring and chairing design reviews at the various phases of a project, reviewing all technical changes that affect the vehicle design, ensuring that system engineering interfaces are identified and managed. Act as the technical interface to the customer, leading customer design reviews and conflict management.
Identify project technical risks. Determine which risks should be actively managed. Work with relevant stakeholders to detail the risks and define a mitigation plan. Ensure risk mitigation is delivered.
Planning and estimating timescales and costs associated with delivery of the scope of work associated with the role. Directly managing the scope of work during the project. Support the development and application of System Engineering process and tools to be used in the role.

Qualifications & Functional Knowledge
Ideally Degree and/or Chartered status
Technical domain experience essential, System Integration experience essential, System Architectural understanding essential.
Rail experience desirable.
Competent in the DOORS requirements management software, desirable.
Significant experience and hands on delivery of the design, analysis, development, testing and delivery of engineering solutions that solve complex requirements.
Provide technical expertise in vehicle level concept development
Be able to demonstrate the ability to use this technical knowledge in the support of other departments (engineering, production, procurement, projects) and the development of less experienced engineering personnel.
Experience of developing and applying a range of system engineering process and tools
