Our Client is a leading Engineering and Manufacturing company within the Defence and Aerospace sectors. They are now looking to recruit an experienced Technical Author as detallied below:

Job Description:

1. Preparing all technical documentation associate with a specific product or project. Typically, working from the project brief, design drawings and bills of material the Technical Author would prepare illustrated documents such as test instructions, service instructions, Work Instructions (C specs), technical support documents, sales leaflets, and any specific documents required by the contract.

2. Maintaining a detailed knowledge of standards and regulations that apply to our types of product. Most commonly these would be to defence standards, British and European standards and directives. Typically: Pressure Equipment Directive This would also include industry practices that are not yet enshrined by standards, an example would be adiabatic shock testing of oxygen valves.

3. When necessary researching the rules that apply in different markets and jurisdictions, disseminating that information to the relevant departments to ensure the product and manufacturing process comply.

4. Carrying out regulatory assessments and creating whatever documentation is required for submission to Notified Bodies to prove compliance of the design and manufacturing process. Including calculations, technical dossiers and associated certificates, marking definitions, declarations of conformity, etc.

5. Analysis and calculations to support documentary submissions. This would include pressure boundary analysis, shock calculations and calculations required by whatever codes the equipment may need to comply with. In many cases this would be work that had not been done before.

6. Reliability and safety analysis using methods such as FMECA (Failure Mode Effects and Criticality) and HAZOP (Hazard and Operability study)

7. Creating material specifications that reflect the requirements of International standards and the Quality Assurance specifications of individual customers and contracts.

8. Carrying out military export classifications, commodity codes and supporting documentation.

9. Preparing and updating spares kits and recommending spares holdings for specific projects. Developing ILS (Integrated Logistical Support) documentation in whatever format is required by that particular contract.

10. Maintaining various depositories, libraries and registers of company documentation. Typically maintaining the Engineering Standards Library in accordance with ISO9001, electronic document libraries on the Library Drive and secure depositories and stand-alone computers for classified information.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

Experienced Technical Author, qualified to BSc. level or equivalent in a relevant mechanical engineering discipline.
Capable of understanding the technical detail of hydraulic and pneumatic valves and assemblies,
Electrical and electronic controls associated with them, interpreting information supplied by sales, engineering and commercial personnel and generating the appropriate documentation.
Comfortable in taking on new work and with an analytical background and experience of safety analysis, reliability analysis and regulatory compliance.

Computer literate in MS office and desktop publishing applications, ideally with some CAD experience including generation of illustrations from CAD models
