What’s the opportunity?

An opportunity has arisen for a Head of Quality to lead the Manufacturing UK Quality team in delivering best practice in Quality Assurance, Quality Engineering and Quality Control in support of the Manufacturing organisation across the UK. This is a particularly exciting time as, due to an increasing workload, the Manufacturing team (a North-West based group) has recently transferred to a new facility in Bolton.

What will you be doing?
  • Provide the direction and leadership for Quality and Business Improvement programmes
  • Provide independent visibility and assurance that manufacturing and related processes are applied across all projects
  • Provide professional advice, facilitation and training on all aspects of quality assurance and control
  • Facilitate and, where appropriate, lead and co-ordinate quality and process development and improvement activities
  • Support and facilitate any assigned risk reduction and aversion strategies and identify sustainable process Improvements to existing methods and processes and provide support to facilitate their implementation
  • Guide the Management team in the identification and reduction of project risks or problem areas / issues associated with process application, process effectiveness or compliance
  • Input to the strategic direction of the Quality Directorate

Reporting to the Group Head of Product Assurance Manufacturing, responsibilities include the following activities:

1. Management and development of the Manufacturing UK Quality Assurance Engineering Team to deliver the following;
  • Assure Quality Assurance requirements are defined in appropriate processes and procedures associated
  • Implement monitoring/surveillance programs to demonstrate effectiveness of quality ownership
  • Generate/update and deliver training in quality assurance disciplines.
  • Facilitate influence devolved quality assurance ownership
  • Investigate Project quality risks in conjunction with the Project Product Assurance Managers.
  • Assure processes are applied effectively and support Project Assurance Managers in the identification of project risks and opportunities.
  • Support audit activities in providing evidence that the function is complying with the quality system requirements
  • Provide support to the Product Assurance Management on customer-related issues.
  • Provide direct support to develop, implement and verify MBDAs process based integrated management system.
  • Provide an assurance that manufacturing & manufacturing development processes are;
  • adequately documented
  • effectively trained
  • improved & updated

2. The management and development of the Manufacturing Quality Engineering Team who are responsible for guidance and support to the Non-Conformance management process, assuring that;
  • Opportunities for product and process improvements are identified, developed and realised
  • Non-conformance are investigated and analysed to determine root cause such that effective corrective actions can be implemented to improved product and process quality
  • Data is compiled and presented, with expert analysis, to non-conformance reviews and improvement initiatives so that proposals for investigations and/or solutions, including process improvements
  • Support and expertise is provided to other Engineering groups
  • Excellent working relationships are developed and maintained with other manufacturing areas
  • Technical analyses and investigations are carried out and reported to support improvement of product and process quality
  • The non-conformance management system is developed and tailored to business needs in line with Customer and Business Management System requirements and Third party approvals
  • Personnel are adequately trained in non-conformance Management and the use of the non-conformance management system

3. Development and management of the quality element of the Manufacturing Function in Manufacturing UK;
  • Support to the establishment and development of the Manufacturing UK Business Management System and Technical Library
  • The effective operation of Process Reviews and Manufacturing Audits to ensure Process compliance.
  • The continued development and dissemination of quality functional excellence throughout Manufacturing UK and into associated areas of the Business.

Strong working relationships with personnel at all levels within the organisation and with Customer Representatives are essential.

Who and what we are looking for from you?
  • Quality professional, with significant experience in process-based integrated management systems and business improvementin an engineering / manufacturing environment, preferably electronics or light current electrical assembly
  • Detailed knowledge of manufacturing operation & customers
  • Degree qualified, or equivalent experience, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Capability to identify sustainable business improvements & ensure effective implementation
  • Ability to build individual & organisational capability by developing competencies & technical knowledge of fellow team members
  • Highly self-motivated and demonstrate a determination and persistence to deliver results despite obstacles and setbacks

Position is based in Bolton, but will require provision of support to Manufacturing at other MBDA sites

Some travel (both UK and international) will be required
