Role Profile

Our client looking for a Service Designer to join a government department to design and deliver joined up end-to-end services. This might include technical, facilities, process or people changes as you work out how to improve the quality, performance or capacity of the service you are considering. Service design is an area of growth in this department the role will involve helping to grow the Service Design capability and use your experience to shape the team, teach design skills and a embed a culture of design thinking.

As a Service Designer, you'll work alongside a variety of professionals, including user researchers, lean practitioners, strategists, policy advisors UX designers, architects and developers to delivery business-focused, user-centred service.

  • Using Service Design tools and techniques, analyse and map out existing services and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Understand user needs through participating in and interpreting user research
  • Lead Medium/Large pieces of service design work
  • Look for commonalities in activity across difference services where improvements could be made
  • Understand the existing supporting system of a service and design targeted improvements to that system to accommodate the new service - both digital and process based
  • Create and rapidly iterate service prototypes
  • Identify and design new service patterns and standards

Skill Set

  • UX/Product Design background


  • Academic or industry experience in a design related role
  • Experience of leading Service Design led projects in a large organisations
  • Sketch and prototype designs on paper and in digital formats
  • Share early designs and iterate your work based on user feedback
  • Explain ideas for designs in a way that other people understand
  • lain design decisions and give constructive feedback
  • Lead a workshop
  • Collaborate with the whole multidisciplinary team during the design process


  • Know how to interpret user research
  • Experience in graphic design and the use of design software (e.g. Photoshop)
  • Work in an agile environment
  • Experience working in a public sector environment
  • Appreciation of designing user interfaces
