Purpose

  • Lead the strategic development and delivery of an integrated communications programme
  • Develop plans to raise awareness of our profile, brand, work and impact through proactive and reactive media relations and digital activity
  • Oversee the development and protection of The Migraine Trust brand

Key activities

Strategy, planning and budget

  • Work with the CEO to develop and deliver a long term communications strategy (including media relations, digital, celebrity liaison, internal communications and brand) designed to raise our profile
  • Work with the CEO to set the annual communications budget, regularly analyse and reforecast, and produce evaluation reports as required
  • Set communications objectives and targets, and develop and report on KPIs
  • Monitor, analyse and apply communications data and insight to improve communications performance
  • Contribute to our strategy and policies, ensuring that our values are reflected in all we do

Develop media relations and digital activities to grow and engage key audiences and opinion formers

Publications

  • Produce material such as e-newsletters, newsletter, annual report,and patient and professional publications from copy development through to design and print

Digital

  • Drive the development and delivery of a digital programme that engages with new and existing supporters online and via social media through positive digital experiences and ongoing relationships
  • Manage and develop the website and social media, including copy editing, digital design, newsletter development, monitoring, problem solving and managing relationships with external suppliers
  • Manage online content ensuring the website is continually reviewed and updated to meet the needs of new and existing audiences, using appropriate communication tools and techniques

Work with colleagues

  • Work with fundraising to input into seamless data processes and journeys as required
  • Work with our scientists to maximise opportunities to raise the profile of our research and our international research conference
  • Work with fundraising, support services and policy colleagues to optimise and create opportunities to promote our service and events programme, our fundraising programme and our policy and campaigns work to media and key audiences
  • Manage external consultants and suppliers as required
  • Continually review our internal and external communication methods making recommendations as appropriate to the Senior Management Team

Media and PR

  • Manage all media relations activity, maintaining national, regional and specialist press and broadcast contacts to raise awareness of the Trust and promote our work
  • Develop and deliver a first class press office service (including out of hours), responding to journalists quickly and appropriately, maximising proactive and reactive opportunities and building relationships with print, broadcast and digital media to enhance our profile
  • Develop PR plans and materials such as press releases, comment pieces and briefings as appropriate with colleagues to build and enhance our profile
  • Develop systems for capturing and monitoring our case studies/media volunteers to maximise their awareness raising potential and ensure the best supporter experience
  • Oversee and develop our media volunteers, ensuring that they are equipped and confident to represent the Trust and feel supported in their activities
  • Co-ordinate appropriate media training and feedback for CEO, staff and spokespeople, including volunteers, trustees and scientists
  • Advise our CEO and colleagues on media/digital activities, both proactive and reactive, including briefing staff or spokespeople for media interviews and acting as a spokesperson as required
  • Working with the CEO, develop a celebrity liaison programme to identify, recruit and retain celebrities who have a personal connection with the cause or a willingness to support the Trust to raise awareness of migraine

Oversee the development and protection our brand

  • Work with the CEO and colleagues to oversee the development and guardianship of the Trust’s brand, ensuring it is fresh, appropriate, engaging and up to date
  • Provide guidance on all aspects, including tone, language and visual identity
  • Oversee and develop existing and new products and publications, images, key messages, stats and facts, ensuring accuracy and brand consistency
  • Continually review and develop all marketing materials to ensure brand consistency
  • Working with the CEO, develop a crisis management programme to ensure the effective and timely management of its reputation and stakeholder relations

External environment

  • Maintain charity and communications expertise by keeping abreast of relevant external developments
  • Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory and best practice standards for all communications activity as required
  • Build relationships with communications peers in the third sector and beyond

General responsibilities

  • Develop a good understanding of the issues surrounding migraine and primary disabling headache conditions
  • Contribute positively to team meetings, team working, collaboration and implementing organisational priorities
  • Have empathy with the aims, goals and values of the Trust, and a commitment to support delivery to meet these
  • Take direction on projects and priorities, which may vary from time to time
  • Be self-servicing and able to act on own initiative where necessary
  • Be flexible within the broad remit of the post, and be prepared to work some evenings and occasional weekends as necessary
  • Manage out of hours press rota
  • Maintain the necessary information and databases to support the Trust
  • Represent the Trust at external meetings and conferences as required
  • Abide by organisational policies and practices
  • Develop a good understanding of external/wider communications practices and standards
  • Undertake training as required

Person specification

In order to be considered for this post you will have to demonstrate that you already have:

Education

  • Numerate and literate with a good standard of education, preferably to degree standard
  • Professional PR or journalism qualifications

Knowledge and experience

  • Significant knowledge of the UK charity sector
  • Significant experience of developing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating the outcomes and impact of communication strategies and budgets
  • Excellent track record of meeting/exceeding targets
  • Significant experience of an internal and external communications role,including in publications, marketing, media relations and digital communications, either in house or with an agency
  • Extensive knowledge of developing and delivering excellent customer service
  • Strong knowledge of digital systems and press office channels, approaches and evaluation methods and an appreciation of integrated communications
  • Strong experience of building, maintaining and developing relationships with diverse media
  • Proven experience of delivering successful communications campaigns
  • Significant experience of analysing complex medical or scientific information
  • Experience of working with high-profile supporters such as celebrities and VIPs
  • Experience of working collaboratively with different teams, both internally and externally
  • Experience in building relationships and dealing with external suppliers and partners
  • Experience of management
