Information about the school

Oakwood Park Grammar School is a five form of entry Boys Grammar School (with co-education in the Sixth Form) of currently just over 1000 students. The school has been on the Oakwood Park Campus since 1959 and shares the area with two other secondary schools and a college of further education. This gives the site a unique feel with over four thousand students. Our students are delightful to work with and are positive about their education. Our teaching and support staff are dedicated and hardworking; staff turnover is very low but in recent years younger staff have brought new ideas into learning and teaching.

Oakwood Park has a wealth of extra-curricular activities for all of its students. Sport is very strong with competitive sides in rugby, football, basketball, cricket and athletics but we also cater for rowing, fencing and table tennis. Music is also very strong with an orchestra and other bands ranging from brass to wind. There are Drama, Robotics and Debating clubs.

A particular feature of the curriculum is the Enrichment Days which take place regularly throughout the year. On these days the timetable is collapsed and this enables us to run trips and visits as well as extended activities in school. This is an area we are particularly proud of and one which we are keen to develop in the future.

The school has a strong record of collaboration and working with local primary schools. We converted to Academy Status in 2011 but this has not changed our commitment to working with the local community, especially with the primary sector.

Academic strengths are high, with 95% of students gaining English and Maths at grades 9 - 4. At A Level nearly 60% of all grades were at A*-B and the vast majority of students proceed to university courses, many of them with the prestigious Russell Group or 1994 Group. Students are regularly prepared for Oxbridge, in 2018 5 students were successful.

In December 2011 the school was graded Outstanding by Ofsted with the report noting that it “fulfils its aims of offering students an exceptional learning experience”. We were obviously delighted with the report but we are not complacent; we want Oakwood Park to be one of the best schools, not just in the county, but in the country.
