Job Description

We are currently recruiting for a New Business Underwriter within the Commercial Risk Solutions (CRS) division of RSA in our Manchester centre. This division specialises in writing all lines of Commercial business for corporate customers in the UK, including Motor and Commercial Combined products.

You will be joining a dynamic, highly motivated and successful trading centre delivering sales and service to all of the UK regions business. Under guidance, you will work with insurance brokers and other professionals across the UK in order to underwrite policies, identify and secure new opportunities, and support profitable growth by assessing the likelihood of future claims in order to deliver against individual and team new business targets. You will suggest ways to reduce risk, decide upon the premium of the insurance, and draw up contracts. You'll also be issuing policies and processing premiums. The role demands that you deliver the highest levels of customer service, getting to know your customers' requirements, explaining technical information, and selling the benefits of our products to them effectively. This will involve developing strong relationships with our brokers and managing enquiries over the phone, in writing and sometimes face to face.

Your sales and relationship skills will be crucial in building Broker relationships and helping to win and retain customers for the Group. You'll have a keen eye for detail as we do work in a regulated environment, but training and support will be given so you can get to grips with our processes and procedures.


* Trading and negotiating on allocated cases or deals to deliver the best result for the business and our customers
* Delivering underwriting decisions, following agreed processes at the designated authority level in order to secure profitable business within the agreed risk appetite
* Providing technical support, direction, guidance and advice to Sales & Underwriting colleagues to deliver market-leading products, secure profitable business and develop the underwriting function in line with the global Underwriting strategy
* Detailed market mapping and management of own pipeline to help support and drive cross sell
* Contributing to technical audits and peer review processes as required to support and enable the maintenance of an effective control environment
* Contributing to the production of new policy wordings or reviews of existing policy wordings to ensure policy documentation is current and accurate
* Leading or playing a major role in the production of new customer solutions or reviews of existing solutions to ensure they are current, accurate and market leading
* Contributing to the wider development of effective business strategies, priorities and market propositions, drawing on own knowledge, understanding and interpretation of local markets, competitors and accounts
* Managing customer and broker interactions either over the telephone or face to face in an efficient, courteous and timely manner in order to deliver high standards of customer satisfaction
* Providing expert advice, guidance and coaching to less qualified and/or experienced colleagues to address technical referrals and raise standards and expertise

The Individual

* Experience in underwriting Regions products, ideally Property, Packages, and Liability (PPL)
* Experience of building and developing successful relationships with Brokers and customers
* Driven and motivated team player with a hardworking 'can do' attitude and a passion for delivering excellent customer service
* Demonstration of high levels of self drive and motivation
* A high degree of accuracy and a keen eye for detail
* Strong initiative and the ability to multitask
