Background:The IT Platforms team is accountable for Aviva’s core platforms enabling service and change delivery while ensuring our platforms are secure, highly available and agile. The area is key to delivering Aviva’s strategy as a Digital First organisation and is the source of Aviva’s software engineering capability.To succeed, the Global Platforms team must achieve world class levels of platform availability whilst simultaneously providing scalable and agile systems that are simple and cost effective to change.The Software Engineer performs analysis, development and technical governance across both Run and Change and will be accountable for the maintenance, quality of code, and compliance to standards within the platform. Software Engineers provide technical development and application functional expertise combined with commercial awareness to ensure high quality change coding from both Aviva and our Global Sourcing Partners.Role Purpose:Analysis\develop & implementing change and run activity in accordance with the agreed platform strategy, standards and governance for a business unit, project, programme, platform or feature team.Performing value adding governance & quality assurance to ensure customer outcome is delivered to the highest standards.Define technical specifications of solutions in accordance with the agreed platform strategy incorporating service fundamentals, security and system performance.Drive continuous improvement through technical and process innovation to optimise the way we deliver to our customers, promoting ways to leverage business benefit out of our platforms at every opportunity.Successfully influencing technical solution through applying expertise to improve the quality and timeliness of change within the Platform.Working closely with the customers during technical design, implementation and warranty.Plan ahead and take into account future developments.Identification, escalation & ownership of risks & issues affecting the quality of deliverables, takes proactive action to prevent risks becoming unacceptable.Key aspects of the role:Analysis of user needs and define technical specifications.Technical Development of existing programs, analysing and identifying areas for modification.Ensuring the security, performance, monitoring and non-functional requirements are inherent within solution.Performance and availability management including system health checks, performance monitoring and disaster recovery planning.Identify and implementing Service improvements including production of improvement plans and applying software upgrades.Subject matter expert providing advice, guidance, knowledge sharing and governance in their areas of expertise (business process, application and technical configuration).Technical development and governance of new projects and initiatives, assessing the impact of initiatives or projects on systems/applications.Champion process improvements, embedding new ways of working focus on driving up quality of deliverables and the way we operate within the Platform.Ensure that changes to the Platform are compliant with Aviva architecture standards, or deviations are agreed with the relevant governance authorities.Promote and evolve Software Engineering Practice.Propose innovative solutions or alternative approaches to difficult issues.Stakeholder management of business and IT SME colleagues.Scope:Assignments will primarily be across all levels of UKI projects/programmes often within Agile cross functional teams, and globally as appropriate. This will include both analysis and development to construct, integrate and maintain service and systems. A detailed knowledge of Application Support and Development processes, standards and associated techniques such as continuous integration, test driven development, behaviour driven development and others.Resource Complexity:Direct and matrix management of:Aviva permanent staff, GSP’s & Contractors.All systems and applications with UKI (Globally where appropriate).Problem Solving:What type of problems need to be solved:
Ability to resolve technical issues in support of change and run activity within their Platform. Provide technical solutions for deficiencies in process, application configuration and operational procedures. What are the key decisions taken:Quality of deliverable and proven to be fit for purpose.Confirmation that deliveries align to standards and service fundamentals.Change:What change is the role holder responsible for?Development and Implementation of technical solutions to deliver better customer outcomes from the Platform.Proactive improvements to operational processes within the platform to met customer expectations and drive efficiencies.Experience / Skills Required:Technical expertise in associated frameworks, e.g. cloud, ratchet, kiss/solid, nunit, cucumber, Jenkins, Microsoft sql server, powershell, RESTful API’S, OO software design patterns, Test & Behaviour Driven Development.Strong experience in server development and associated concerns, e.g. thread management, database access, security.Hands on experience on high volume systems, e.g. 100->1000 transactions per minute.Proactive ‘can do’ attitude, good verbal and written communication skills enabling effective interaction with both wider IT and Business stakeholders.Demonstrate in depth experience of the Platform they support with practical experience gained over a substantial period.Significant knowledge of Application Support and Development processes, standards and associated techniques including continuous integration, test driven development, behaviour driven development.Propose innovative solutions or alternative approaches to difficult issues.Proven track record in delivering technical solutions across run and/or change within this Platform.Experience of working with our Global Sourcing partners and developing solutions with will improve the customers’ experience.Proven knowledge of Technical platforms, software engineering practices and system management methodologies.IT is the key enabler for Aviva to achieve its strategy.
