Charteris Global Search are exclusively working in partnership with a leading UK based specialist engineering business, who are focussed on the servicing and maintenance of HV substation Transformers & Switchgear, in UK and France.

A privately-owned profit-making company with turnover in the region of £5m, established since the mid 1940’s with dealings across the USA, Asia and Europe. Clients include, National Grid, Scottish Power, Siemens and Hapam.

The attitudes underlying the management of the company make it quite a special place to work with plans in place to enter into a long-term partnership with a major multinational company.

Appointment of the Project Manager

The Project Manager will work closely with the Interim MD to deliver the business activities in order to achieve the desired growth for the business.

This appointment is therefore an exciting and challenging opportunity for a genuinely entrepreneurial individual to join a successful division, exercising skills which will include leadership, technical competence and insight, as well as people, commercial and selling skills. There will be the possibility of career development in to the General Managers position.


Main Duties:

Looking for a Project Lead to work on substation installation and servicing projects across the UK, with a particular focus on HV Transformers. Responsible for the ownership of engineering operations, tendering, managing costs, budgets and directly leading operational teams. You will have previous exposure to substation build with experience of leading and managing multidisciplinary teams to safely deliver HV projects to the UK Transmission & Distribution network owners and their associated tier one suppliers. Excellent communication skills are required for this role as well as a flexible and adaptable approach.

Key tasks

You will grasp the total business operation and lead the operation for every aspect of the business
to achieve agreed objectives.
Support the interim MD with Business Development activities.
Lead and build a high performing Electrical team in UK; manage its motivation, skills balance, ownership of vision and aims, rewards, disciplines, priorities, activities.
Manage the delivery of all aspects of operations, quality and customer service.
Provide control to the business in direction, priorities, planning, commercial commitments, costs and expenditures, quality of service, compliances, administration processes, employee behaviours, and work culture.



Degree level preferred: mechanical/electrical engineering or equivalent site-based apprenticeship career progression.


• Proven project management in developing and delivering technical services in the power distribution industry.
• Experience of HV project management
• Likely to come from the HV power transmission industry, large companies servicing it, or design/construction.
• Proven ability to build & motivate teams; proven influencing, negotiating and customer relationship skills.
• Other desirable attributes/experience/skills include Continuous Improvement & Quality (eg 6 Sigma), and sourcing of products internationally.
• Prince 2/PM qualified
• Client relationship management
• Experience with Earned Value methodologies
• Experience in managing highly technical engineering outsourcing teams
• Understanding of a wide range of programme and project management methodologies and how to integrate them into different environments
