The purpose of the Market Risk Analyst is to manage complex data and theoretical problems to provide detailed reports with clear summaries and recommendations to senior management.

Key responsibilities are as follows:

  • Market risk analysis and recommendations including scenario testing, option valuation of price and demand risk mitigation.

  • Maintaining and managing pricing systems and invoice validation.

  • Demand Forecasting - analysing the impacts on demand of multiple variables, namely weather, economic forecasts, site closures, etc.

  • Power Balancing

  • Market risk reporting and valuation of risk

The role of the Market Risk Analyst:

  • Developing and managing Power and Gas market risk models (VARs, Scenario testing).

  • Calculation and optimization of balancing costs and modelling risk.

  • Support the business with ad hoc analysis and investigation into current pricing and forecasting modelling.

  • Finding and engaging with external parties to find mutual areas of benefit for hedging and business collaboration.

  • Data collation and interrogation to determine statistical trends

  • External talks on risk and managing risk strategies, market update webinars

  • Build and maintain financial and analytical spreadsheets and databases to model current and future business activities and products.

  • Manipulate data from a multitude of sources including SQL databases to produce portfolio statistics

  • Document and summarise any analytical findings with possible strategy suggestions..

  • Use initiative to investigate data issues and to follow through to a resolution.

  • Production of accurate and timely reports.

  • Help with general analysis, projects and ad hoc reporting as required.

The following attributes are essential:

Job knowledge:Understanding of global energy markets, especially UK.


Good numeric skills with an eye for details and accuracy.


Good knowledge of maths and statistics.

Good interpersonal skills and analytical skills.

Experience: 5 years’ experience in Energy Markets (paid or voluntary)

Education: Educated to Degree level or equivalent

Behaviours: Ability to work to deadline
