What it's like to work here

Established in the 20th century, this hillside arboretum has now been maintained by the National Trust for 60 years and has built up a collection of more than 1,000 different shrubs and trees, many of them rare. Visit any time of year for a delightful stroll through the personal plant collection of one man, who was passionate about shrubs and trees. The Collection and setting are too unique to ever disappoint.

The tea-room is outside the paying area of the arboretum, so feel free to come down and treat yourself to our wholesome range of home baked food for no extra charge. All our cakes are made on the day using local ingredients wherever possible, so you know you're getting a natural product to match your warm welcome.

What you'll be doing

As the Catering Manager your role is to provide leadership and support to your team. Your support means that the team can be left to get on with what they do best, while you manage the behind the scenes operations, from admin to people management and everything in between. Working to make sure we provide excellent meals using beautiful local produce, you’ll also be the leader in customer service and maintaining high standards of presentation and excellence in the food we serve. One of the key elements of your role will be delivering an excellent visitor welcome, as a high percentage of our visitors will spend time in the café, so it’s critical that their experience is as good as anywhere else on the property.

Who we're looking for

First and foremost, you'll be ambitious. We have grand plans and we need a Catering Manager that is full of ideas as well as experience. You’ll have experience leading a food operation previously, will be passionate about food, and will enjoy inspiring a team to deliver great results and exceed customer’s expectations.

So, you’ll be;

  • Inspiring and great with people
  • Great at working with and supervising a team and unafraid to give direction and feedback
  • Exceptionally detailed orientated when it comes to food presentation
  • Able to understand your customers and take pride in delivering excellent customer service – personally, and through your team
  • Able to bring to life new ideas

It will be helpful if you can demonstrate the following experience on your CV;

  • Experience of managing a catering operation with knowledge of best practice (including production and service of quality food, menu design)
  • Customer service/ sales focused
  • Coaching, developing and supervising teams – rota’s, managing absence, giving feedback
  • Working towards delivering targets – customer satisfaction/ financial
  • Food Hygiene qualifications and Health & Safety compliance
