Senior Buyer/Category Head

A family business since 1897 we’ve grown steadily to become one of the country’s leading garden centre groups and have recently embarked on an exciting 5-year plan of capital investment with a view to significantly grow both turnover and profitability. We’re investing in the look and feel of our stores, re-developing and re-energising out restaurants and further developing our ranges and product offer. As part of this ongoing investment and development of the business we are now looking to recruit a Head of Category for our Gift, Home and Clothing ranges.
Reporting to the Commercial Director, this position takes full accountability for delivering a compelling customer proposition through insightful product development and selection and commercial range planning coupled with faultless in-store execution. Regarding product, the role is integral to the shaping of the overall category, taking ownership for the strategic development of product and ensuring the proposition stays in line with both company brand and customer profile. Working with a broad range of external suppliers, many in the Far East, the role works in partnership to create and source an exciting and challenging product mix. Regarding people, the position has responsibility for a small focussed Buying & Merchandising team and leads this team ensuring the delivery of sales, profit and stock targets.
This role will appeal to a Buyer or Senior Buyer with an understanding of merchandising looking to take on a more senior position. First and foremost, the role is a commercial one and will be of interest to Buyers who are creative, who understand trends and who have an instinctive feel for product but do not let their creative impulses cloud their commercial judgement. This is a trading position and a methodical and organised Buyer able to manage the WSSI effectively and trade the category is what is required. Experience wise we are looking for candidates with retail buying experience gained within a product focussed and design led category, ideally from a multiple or department store business but candidates are welcome to apply from further afield who feel they can add value to the business. Based in a beautiful part of East Anglia the position may particularly appeal to individuals looking to achieve a better work life balance and escape the daily grind of commuting to London.
