Service Manager - Children's Social Care

Manpower is currently recruiting for a Service Manager to work within Children's Social Care of West Sussex County Council; this will be a 3 - 6 month interim position starting as soon as possible. You will be responsible for Children's units across West Sussex County Council, including 4 disability, 2 mainstream, and 1 Secure; this role requires confident, ambitious leadership which changes the lives of local children and families.

The aim of Children's Social Care Services in West Sussex County Council is to help every child to experience the same opportunities and enjoyment afforded to the average child in West Sussex. They provide a targeted approach for those most in need, intervene at the earliest possible point, and drive to improve quality of services and ensure the best possible outcomes.

The Service Manager is accountable for the delivery of social work and other services to children and their families across the County. The service provides support and advice to children and families with the aim of enabling them to live 'ordinary lives' and fulfil their full potential, co-ordinating services through to adulthood.

You will hold operational and financial responsibility, direct responsibility for a small to medium budget (typically around £2.5 million), and be accountable for providing professional leadership and managing the effective performance of the group

You will require broad significant theoretical knowledge across the specialism of the areas managed, sound practical and theoretical knowledge of the political environment of local government and partner organisations along with extensive knowledge of policies, legislation, statutory regulations and guidance in relation to Safeguarding, Children in Need, Children Looked After and Care leavers, Workforce Development and College of Social Work Standards (as appropriate to the area of focus).

As a Service Manager, you will hold a recognised professional Social Work Qualification e.g. Degree in Social Work, DipSW, CQSW or equivalent, along with recognised post qualifying award in Social Work or demonstrable evidence of continuous professional development at a similar level, and a current Health and Care Professions Council Registration. A recognised post graduate management qualification or demonstrable experience of operating at this level will also be required.

For this position, you will require significant post qualification experience in dealing with significant and complex issues, evidence of managing teams, considerable experience of managing and leading business activities with conflicting requirements and experience of managing a budget and contributing to decision making on high level spending.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to make sound pragmatic problem solving decisions, highly developed communication skills, sound partnership working skills, along with effective people management and performance management skills, with the ability to lead and inspire, providing direction and support to individuals and teams.
