Leadership and Management

  • Provide clear direction and decisive leadership of the commercial function within the organisation.

  • Lead, manage, coach and develop directly reporting staff to encourage and facilitate achievement of their objectives, targets and budgets.

  • You will be responsible for leading and managing the Client Accounts, Business Development and Communication teams.

  • Work with human resources to secure candidates who will be an asset to the Commercial Directorate.

  • Ensure the organisation has a fit for purpose commercial team able to meet the needs of a growing and complex business.

Main Duties / Responsibilities:

Strategic and Commercial Duties

  • Develop and deliver commercial strategies including business development, marketing and communications that are appropriate to the needs of the business and responsive to opportunity, in close collaboration with the CEO and other board members.

  • Contribute fully to the development of company strategy across all areas of the business, challenging assumptions and decision-making as appropriate and providing financial analysis and guidance on all activities, plans, targets and business drivers.

  • Understand existing and potential new markets for products and services, identify value drivers and profitable commercial opportunities to grow revenue, profit and market share.

  • Deliver existing and develop new strategic partnerships that generate commercial returns.

  • Identify and assess the risks and rewards of potential new commercial opportunities.

  • Deliver consistent, sustainable, profitable growth in sales revenues, ensuring that targets are met.

  • Analyse the financial climate and market trends to assist senior executives in creating strategic plans for the future

  • Be aware of external factors that could impact including competitors, government, legislation/or regulation.

  • Ensure that commercial activities meet or improve upon budget, cost, volume and/or productivity targets.

  • Advise on pricing strategies and positioning taking regard of market sensitivities.

  • Develop delivery plans for new services, and products

  • Produce and build a PR strategy to reinforce brand recognition amongst clients and specifiers.

  • Championing and leading each new product or service development, from innovation through to successful implementation across each business function, to enable it to become a core part of the business.

    Purpose of Job

  • The main purpose of the Commercial Director [CD] is to develop and implement an innovative, growth focused commercial strategy focusing on new product/service areas, emerging markets and optimising share and return from established areas.

  • The CD will therefore help to devise, develop and deliver a comprehensive strategic and tactical plan for business development, income generation and awareness raising.

  • The CD will be expected to develop and agree operational delivery plans to either enhance real or existing provision and to introduce new services into the market.

  • As a member of the Management Team the CD will contribute to the development of business and strategic plans by providing high quality, dynamic commercial information.

  • The CD will be required to manage direct reports to achieve the Directorate’s commercial and business objectives while working within company policies ensuring client facing activities are exceeding client expectations.

  • The CD will also help to raise the organisation’s media profile by defining and managing a new communication strategy.

Building Relationships

  • Form a close working relationship with the CEO, other Senior Executives and NonExecutives.

  • Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of clients, potential clients, partners and stakeholders.

  • Personally and as a member of the Management Team contribute to the business development, reputation and integrity of the organisation.

  • Be responsible for communicating commercial strategies to all staff and board members.

  • Consistently achieve high levels of client satisfaction and trust.

  • Work with senior teams to grow the business, formulating strategies and plans.

  • Establish a high level of credibility and manage strong working relationships with external parties including clients and advisors.

  • Communicating with all major stakeholders (internal and external) to achieve business objectives.

  • Understand the requirements of existing customers to ensure their needs are being met.

  • Act to acquire new customers and manage client relationships (new and existing)

  • Developing and maintaining an excellent understanding of the key customers/target audience to ensure that their needs are being met and that their business is retained.

  • Work with the rest of the Management Team to drive a collaborative workplace culture.
