Summary of role:

The (Senior) Database Administrator/Developer provides a vital role in the provision, support and maintenance of a number of key business and public services including Web, Finance, HR, CRM and scientific databases.

The post holder will lead on database related projects and improvements to production database services, recommend database strategy to the Technology Solutions (TS) management team (and line manage another database administrator/developer role).

The role will manage both operational and project plans, and must be comfortable communicating with a wide range of stakeholders. The post holder is responsible for planning, installing, administering and supporting database services, databases and applications in a predominantly Microsoft SQL Server environment. The post holder will carry out planned and routine maintenance to applications and database servers, monitor system performance as needed and plan future service development strategy.

Specific technical skills include Microsoft SQL Server configuration, installation and on-going management (including SSIS and SSRS), database analysis, database backup and recovery, problem solving and communication skills, environment patching, database refreshes, documentation skills and understanding of MS Windows server management with regard to Microsoft SQL service provision. Management and support of other RDBMS (e.g. MySQL and MS Access) may be required, and exposure to MS Dynamics CRM and digital product development environments would be of benefit.

Skills, knowledge and experience:

- Proven experience of Microsoft SQL Server configuration, optimisation, installation, backup and on-going management

- In depth understanding of SQL Server automation and integration including SSIS

- Good knowledge of relational database analysis and design

- Understanding of MS Windows server management with regard to database hosting/service provision

- Experience of bespoke reporting including SSRS

- Significant experience using T-SQL or other database programming environments

- Experience working within structured project management processes (e.g. Prince2, Agile)

- Previous management experience with ability to manage staff training and mentoring plans

- Proven ability to troubleshoot database service related workflow and performance issues

- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills

- Ability to communicate effectively with staff at all levels and prepare appropriate documentation

- Capability to proactively prioritise, estimate and time-box tasks and activities
