Our client is a rapidly-growing and progressive Bristol accountancy firm. They provide all aspects of accounting services and specialise in owner-managed businesses, SMEs and start-up companies in Bristol and the South West.

Purpose of role:

Working as part of the Accounts team, you will assist the Manager with a growing portfolio of businesses providing a high level of client service and having responsibility for the production of SME accounts and business tax computations.

Key responsibilities:

Client portfolio

• Manage a client portfolio under the guidance of your manager

• Identify, plan and prioritise own work tasks

• Prepare accounts from client trial balance and Xero Workpapers for review

• Carry out analytical review of trial balance and escalate any problems identified to Manager for review

• Prepare tax calculations for review

• Complete agreed tasks to the standards and deadlines required and communicate if expectations cannot be met

• Explain delegated tasks in a clear, concise way and checking for understanding

• Take ownership for assigned tasks through to completion and deliver work to a high quality

• Keep manager and colleagues updated on progress and feedback, ensuring that issues are raised in a timely way

• Identify ways to improve completion and delivery of work

• Update manager and team regarding client, workload and priorities

• Take on any appropriate new client work to increase your portfolio

Client relationships

• Deal with day to day client queries, obtaining relevant information and resolve them effectively

• Attend client meetings and prepare schedule of information

• Record client contact efficiently including call notes, agendas and meeting notes

• Build relationships and rapport with clients, maintaining appropriate regular contact

• Respond appropriately and promptly to client demands, ensuring information provided is clear and accurate

• Monitor and communicate the progress of client work with the client and appropriate internal team

• Proactively look for opportunities that can add value to the client and improve client service delivery

Team work

• Take on additional tasks outside of agreed workload to support colleagues

• Demonstrate an understanding of individual and team objectives and your role in achieving them

• Participate actively in team meetings, providing constructive feedback and suggestions

• Actively encourage and provide support to colleagues and juniors as appropriate

• Build relationships with colleagues within the team and wider office to understand the services provided to clients and who the key contacts are

• Proactively share knowledge and resources with others

Commercial awareness

• Actively take an interest in each client’s business within your portfolio to develop knowledge and awareness

• Identify additional areas of interest and needs for clients

• Refer new business opportunities as appropriate and support senior management with new business initiatives

Financial management

• Record all time spent on jobs and complete timesheets on a weekly basis with supporting data/narrative of work undertaken

• Ensure expenses are submitted on a timely basis and within policy guidelines

• Meet agreed financial performance targets, appropriate for your grade

• Be aware of and monitor actual time against budget when completing a task or job

• Inform manager when actual time exceeds budget with supporting explanation on a timely basis

• Draft clear, concise and well-structured fee correspondence

Personal development

• Keep up to date on technical developments and regulatory changes, attending appropriate training and keeping technical reading up to date

• Look for opportunities to increase experience, taking responsibility for expanding knowledge

• Seek and apply feedback on your performance

• Actively seek learning opportunities, applying skills learnt 'on the job’ and on training courses

Candidate Profile

We are looking for someone who is ACA/ACCA qualified or part-qualified, has relevant and current experience in accounts preparation and tax within an accountancy practice along with strong commercial awareness and enjoys developing client relationships.

Key skills:

• Excellent interpersonal skills - able to interact with a broad range of people and communicate effectively and credibly

• Strong IT skills including detailed knowledge of Microsoft Office packages (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and experience of accounting packages including Xero and knowledge of CCH systems would be an advantage

• Strong organisational skills and eye for detail

• Excellent team working skills but also able to work on own initiative

• Effective time management skills, able to work well in a pressurised environment and prioritise work

• Results orientated to meet and exceed client expectations, be motivated to deliver high quality work that consistently meet internal and external client deadlines

• Up to date accounting knowledge including accounting standards

• Commercial awareness - strong understanding of clients and their businesses
