Our client is looking for an Accounts Junior to join their rapidly-growing and progressive Bristol accountancy firm. They provide all aspects of accounting services and specialise in owner-managed businesses, SMEs and start-up companies in Bristol and the South West.

They pride themselves on the long-established client relationships they have developed and their technological expertise which has enabled them to advise clients on the fast-changing online accounting innovations available that can revolutionise the way they run their business finances.

Purpose of role:

Working as part of the Accounts team, you will assist with the processing of records and production of trial balances for a growing portfolio of businesses, ensuring any problems are escalated to the Accounts Senior or Manager.

Key responsibilities:

Client portfolio

• Identify, plan and prioritise own work tasks

• Process records promptly and efficiently

• Check to ensure payments, amounts and records are correct

• Chase client for records as appropriate

• Take client records and produce a trial balance

• Complete bookkeeping work and VAT returns

• Keep job tracking up to date

• Identify any problems with records or documents and escalate to Accounts Senior or manager for review

• Carry out analytical review of trial balance and escalate any problems identified to Accounts Senior/manager for review

• Complete agreed tasks to the standards and deadlines required and communicate if expectations cannot be met

• Take ownership for assigned tasks through to completion and deliver work to a high quality

• Keep Accounts Senior and manager updated on progress and feedback, ensuring that issues are raised in a timely way

• Update Accounts Senior/manager and team regarding client, workload and priorities

• Take on any appropriate new client work

Client relationships

• Deal with day to day client queries, obtaining relevant information and resolve them effectively

• Identify and prepare information needed for client meetings for manager or partner

• Build relationships and rapport with clients

• Record client contact efficiently including call notes, agendas and meeting notes

• Respond appropriately and promptly to client demands, ensuring information provided is clear and accurate

Team work

• Take on additional tasks outside of agreed workload to support colleagues

• Demonstrate an understanding of individual and team objectives and your role in achieving them

• Participate actively in team meetings

• Build relationships with colleagues within the team and wider office to understand the services provided to clients and who the key contacts are

• Proactively share knowledge and resources with others

Commercial awareness

• Actively take an interest in clients’ business to develop knowledge and awareness

• Feedback client comments to the team or manager

• Assist with any new business initiatives as directed Financial management

• Record all time spent on jobs and complete timesheets on a weekly basis with supporting data/narrative of work undertaken

• Ensure expenses are submitted on a timely basis and within policy guidelines

• Meet agreed financial performance targets, appropriate for your grade

• Be aware of and monitor actual time against budget when completing a task or job

• Inform Audit Senior/manager when actual time exceeds budget with supporting explanation on a timely basis

• Be aware of and achieve chargeable hours

• Draft clear, concise and well-structured fee correspondence

• Keep up to date on technical developments and regulatory changes, attending appropriate training and keeping technical reading up to date

Candidate Profile

We are looking for someone who has good bookkeeping skills along with experience of preparing accounts using computer software.

A qualification relevant to accountancy would be an advantage along with experience working with clients in a professional services environment.

Key skills:

• Excellent interpersonal skills - able to interact with a broad range of people and communicate effectively and credibly

• Strong IT skills including detailed knowledge of Microsoft Office packages (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and some experience of accounting packages would be an advantage

• Strong organisational skills and eye for detail

• Excellent team working skills but also able to work on own initiative

• Effective time management skills, able to work well in a pressurised environment and prioritise work

• Commercial awareness -an interest and understanding of clients and their businesses
