We are looking to recruit an interim Senior Litigation Advisory Lawyer pending permanent recruitment to the role. The ideal candidate will have a good knowledge of a range of litigation areas and in particular a strong prosecutions background with experience of prosecuting on behalf of a public body.

To be responsible for the management of a designated sub-team within the Litigation Team in Legal Services delivering and supporting the provision of high quality, value for money, effective and authoritative legal services in respect of the work carried out by the Litigation Team.

To be the senior specialist lawyer in advising on litigation related matters which will include a full range of:

Housing/landlord and tenant

Commercial property


Local Government

Civil and Criminal procedure

Judicial Review

To have an excellent knowledge of and be able to advise on:

Corporate Governance and Information (shared with other teams)

To contribute to the management of the Legal Services team.

Generic Accountabilities

Provide expert and proactive advice, drafting and case preparation on behalf of the Council primarily in relation to Housing/Criminal/Civil/Employment law related court proceedings, and also in other proceedings as required. To provide advocacy for interim applications, short hearings and other matters not requiring a lawyer with higher rights.

Provide legal advice within other areas of local government law as required

Provide expert legal advice on the range of litigation options available, the strength of cases and other legal or technical issues which need to be addressed in the context of proceedings or potential proceedings.

Keep up to date with the law within the team’s area or area of specialism and advise clients and other colleagues through pro-active advice, training and briefing materials.

Provide expert and proactive strategic and operational legal advice in the specialist area(s) of law particularly in complex and high-risk matters

Participate in the creation and delivery of service level agreements with client services, including developing and maintaining standards and systems in accordance with Lexcel, the case management system and other appropriate quality standards.

Previous public sector experience desirable not essential
