An exciting opportunity for a Head of Design and UX to join a leading UK publisher and play a key role in shaping all of their digital products. This person should have a passion for mentoring and growing a team who create the best-in-class user experiences. You will set design standards across a portfolio of products and ensure our small team of UI / UX designers and researchers produce high-quality, engaging, on brand and consistently high quality output.

Main Responsibilities

  • Managing and developing a team of UX/UI designers and researchers.
  • Setting clear goals, managing resources accordingly, ensuring that the team can meet the demands of their respective product roadmaps and mentoring team members towards growth and success.

  • Engage the UX team and the greater product organisation by being a champion of design best practice and setting the user experience strategy.

  • Leading, mentoring and growing the team in their development and growth as designers, researchers and UX engineers.

  • Supervise and support the creation of user flows, wireframes, information architecture, interface mockups and final UI designs which synthesize user data and research.

  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders, product managers and development teams to iterate existing products and design and build new functionality.

  • Champion the user experience for all users, including advertisers as well as end users by ensuring our teams follow a user-centred, iterative design process.

  • Play a key part in high-profile, business critical projects.

  • Stay up-to-date with market trends in digital.

Ideal Candidate

  • You are an enabler of people and a person who loves to see your team grow and succeed.
  • You believe design is about problem solving, not pure aesthetics.

  • Expert understanding of interaction, usability and visual design principles and the tools used to produce these (Sketch, Photoshop etc).

  • Good understanding of HTML/CSS and responsive design.

  • Thorough knowledge of UX research methods (quantitative and qualitative) and how best to apply them within the development process.

  • Able to work well with product managers, developers and testers in small project teams using agile development methodologies.

  • Able to effectively manage expectations of stakeholders while advocating for the user.

  • Able to communicate effectively at all levels, collaborate to solve problems, present design and sell solutions, and keep colleagues informed.

  • Excellent leadership and UX evangelism with a proven ability to work successfully with Product and Engineering.

  • A compelling portfolio, with the ability to describe the thinking behind design decisions.


  • Minimum 2 years experience in a management or leadership role on a creative team.
  • Minimum 5 years of design and UX experience.

  • Design background: strong portfolio with examples of your approach to interaction design and user research.

  • Track record of uncovering actionable insights through quantitative and qualitative research.
