As a Merchandiser, you will work in close collaboration with your colleagues in Buying, Buying Services and Supply Chain.You will be the Space Planning expert for your category and you will be ultimately responsible for the customer-focussed, profitable deployment of your category range. You will develop a thorough understanding of the factors that affect your category both within Iceland and in the broader market.

To achieve this, you will access, interrogate and understand market level data sources such as Kantar and Nielsen, as well as internal performance reports and customer insight. You will, therefore, be comfortable analysing complex data sets to drill into opportunities and issues, which in turn you will be able to present back as clear, tangible recommendations.

Key Accountabilities

Micro Space

You will deliver targeted insight to the category team on sales & profit opportunities such as i) optimised deployment of the category range, ii) optimal utilisation of space, iii) best solutions for customer focussed blocking, flow and offering, iv) recommendations for new or alternative options for trial. You will deliver new planograms through the annually identified range change cycles, as well as ad hoc requirements for specific stores or one-in-one-out activity. You will manage the business risk around waste, shrinkage and inventory through accurate planograms and use of Iceland's case and inventory rules. You will actively and confidently challenge those decisions which run counter to customer mission, shopping logic or operational efficiency during your planogram build process.

Midi Space

You will work closely with and provide insight to the Floor Planning team to ensure optimal allocation of space for your categories across the estate. You will support the Floor Planning team with the allocation of space to New and Refit stores. You will support the Floor Planning team with new thinking around category flows and adjacencies, including proposing trial activity to continuously improve our customer logic.

You will make regular visits to our stores, to ensure the reality matches the plan. You will make regular visits to our stores with your own team, and your category team to help identify issues and opportunities in the 'real world' Regular engagement with your category team, to ensure you have your finger on the pulse in this fast-paced environment. You will conduct regular competitor visits to help you maintain your already developed understanding of changes in the supermarket industry. You will be an advocate for our customer and our store colleagues during range review process, by ensuring store workload is minimised and customer shopping logic is embraced and not disregarded. You will work with your Merchandising colleagues and be sure to engender a strong team spirit within the team.

Essential Criteria
Proven experience within a retail merchandising environment, and grocery retail management experience
Able to demonstrate experience with office systems that would benefit the role
Good academic background (Ideally A-level or above)
Excellent analytical and numerical skills
A flexible approach to the working environment and able to demonstrate the ability to respond to a fast moving, rapidly changing market and business.
Experienced in influencing and communicating at a variety of levels and directions
Excellent PC skills, including all standard Microsoft Office application
Excellent MS Excel skills will be a plus, as will good knowledge of PowerPoint.
Experience of Space Planning software is essential & ideally JDA qualified
Additional analytical or data mining knowledge may be seen as an advantage
