At North Midland we are delivering ~£130M p.a. of projects in collaboration with clients across the UK water sector, helping them to solve their AMP6 challenges and engaging on solutions for the AMP7 Delivery Programme. Nomenca has a unique offering, providing services from feasibility and design through to offsite fabrication, installation, construction and commissioning whilst supporting clients with operations and optimisation of assets. The Head of Design will report to the Engineering Director, and be part of the Engineering Management Team alongside fellow regional Heads of Design and Technical Managers, with direct responsibility for the successful operation of one of Nomenca’s regional design teams. This will involve the management of the regional design team and responsibility for the successful delivery of design projects to clients. As a member of the Engineering Management Team, the role will also require active participation in the leadership and management of the UK-wide Engineering team, taking on responsibility for operational and strategic activities that stretch beyond regional boundaries. The core responsibilities of the role are: * Promote a culture of “safety first”, in both the welfare of our people, and ensuring that all designs are compliant with all legislative and company standards and procedures * Provide leadership and management of all design staff in the region * Recruit the best individuals available to meet the company’s growth expectations, working with the central HR team and using social media to maximise candidate interest * Line management responsibility for Design Managers within the region, with accountability for the management of all resources within the region including staff mentoring, training and development * Build and foster good working relationships with the regional management team, and promote a collaborative culture within the design team * Manage the regional design team to ensure the production and management of designs to time, cost and quality, utilising the Design Management System (DMS) to monitor and control delivery of all design / technical services projects * Actively promote and deploy BIM on projects working within the agreed company framework and strategy for BIM * Lead the preparation of fee estimates and tenders for design projects, adhering to the company’s governance requirements for review, approval and sign-off of tenders * Manage customer (internal and external) relationships and achieve unrivalled customer satisfaction, developing our relationships with existing clients and securing new clients for design and technical services * Lead strategic objectives as assigned on behalf of the Engineering Management Team, and work collaboratively across the business to develop and implement strategic action plans * In conjunction with the Engineering Director and management team, develop financial budgets and targets and manage the to ensure that these predictions are achieved Skills and Experience The key skills required for this role are: * Management of people, at varying levels, providing leadership, staff development and retention of key personnel * Customer relationship building, with an ability to interact and develop excellent, long term relationships with senior representatives of clients and partners * Management of design teams and control of projects * Excellent communication skills * Negotiation and influencing skills The knowledge requirements for this role are: * A demonstrable engineering leader in the UK water sector, with a comprehensive knowledge of standards and specifications * In-depth understanding of the design and construction of water assets (infrastructure and non-infrastructure) * Programme control and cost management approaches to manage design projects * A good understanding of contract conditions and an astute commercial awareness * Working knowledge of Microsoft packages * An understanding of PAS1192 and its applicability in the water sector * An appreciation of the regulatory drivers that impact the water sector and the future trends that will affect Nomenca’s service offering The experience requirements for this role are: * A proven track record of successfully delivering programmes of design on water company frameworks and individual contracts of varying size * Chartered Engineer with affiliation to a recognised professional body, e.g. IMechE, IET, ICE, IChemE * Experienced in working within standard forms of contract conditions within the UK construction sector
