Two new posts are available within the Dept of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care as a result of service development. This development is to support the new combined Critical Care Unit in the new District General Hospital. It is therefore desirable to have additional training and experience in Critical Care medicine although applicants with other sub-specialty interests are also welcomed.

The new District General Hospital opens in December 2017 although the post is available from now. The successful candidate will join a team of 15 consultants, 5 trainees and 6 Specialty Doctors. The new DGH has 8 theatres performing surgery in appropriate specialties with endoscopy/minor procedure rooms, day case unit and 23 hr ward built in. There is an active acute and chronic pain service. The combined Critical Care Unit has 17 beds and is adjacent to theatres. The Dept of Anaesthesia offices are also adjacent. The hospital enjoys a rural site on the outskirts of Dumfries and the design maximises the views of the surrounding countryside. Members of the department have been heavily involved in the design at all stages.

The post will include fixed and flexible sessions in the elective and emergency rota and sessions in the Critical Care Unit. On-call is currently 1 in 6.

Dumfries is a regional centre for APLS, ALS, ALERT, IMPACT, paramedic and undergraduate training and we are recognised for both Basic and Higher Specialist Postgraduate training. The new hospital has a purpose built education centre incorporating simulation training facilities

Applications for part-time or job share employment are also welcome.
