Job Purpose:

To support all Health Safety and Environmental Matters concerning the company's plants. By reviewing, evaluating, and analysing work environments and designing programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent accidents or injury caused by chemical, physical, or ergonomic factors.

The HSE Engineer will be responsible for conducting inspections and enforcing adherence to laws and regulations governing the health and safety of individuals in relation to the facilities.

Competencies of the HSE Engineer:

  • Making changes to working practices that are safe and comply with legislation
  • Preparing and roll out of health and safety strategies and developing internal policies
  • Carrying out risk assessments and action plans based on results
  • Outlining safe operational procedures which identify and take account of all relevant hazards
  • To carry out regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented
  • Safety Training Co-ordinator leading in-house training with managers and employees about health and safety issues and risks
  • Keeping and maintaining records of inspections findings and producing reports that suggest improvements
  • Collation of data relating to HSE and maintaining of records for example: Accidents and Near Misses
  • Championing H&S meetings, providing direction where necessary
  • Keeping up to date with new legislation and maintaining a working knowledge of all HSE Executive legislation and any developments that affect the employer's industry
  • Producing management reports, presentations, newsletters and bulletins where necessary
  • Ensuring the safe installation of equipment
  • Advising on and where necessary arranging the safe disposal of hazardous substances
  • Advising on a range of specialist areas, e.g. fire regulations, hazardous substances, required training noise, safeguarding machinery and occupational diseases.
  • Championing Fire Safety including Carrying out Fire Drills
  • Point of contact for Trained First Aid staff
  • Conduct contractor Health and Safety induction Training
  • Health and safety statistics reporting
  • Support on Adhoc projects relating to Health Safety and Environmental matters
  • Accident and claims co-ordination and investigation
  • COSHH Co-ordinator

Skills required of the HSE Engineer:

  • Using good judgment
    * Excellent communication and presentation skills
    * Methodical and computer literate
  • Good attention to detail
    * Being proficient and self-assured
  • Based in Tyne and Wear but able to travel to other sites if necessary

Education required of the HSE Engineer:

  • NEBOSH Diploma
