We are a small professional services company, the accountant for which will be a member of a team of 3 others, each having their own area of responsibility. The role will encompass the accounting needs of the operating and associated company and the supervision of the client schemes accounting. There will be support and training available for those aspects of the role that are less familiar. The business comprises the administration of approximately 80 Small Self Administered Pension Arrangements. The assets of the schemes include property and various investments. Some of the Schemes involve the payments of pensions to members. Some schemes will have VAT registered assets and need to make quarterly returns.

The accountant would be responsible for applying accounting principles and procedures to the production of monthly accounts within the schemes including:

  • compile and analyse financial information to prepare financial statements including monthly and annual accounts as required
  • establish and monitor the implementation and maintenance of accounting control procedures
  • ensure financial records are maintained in compliance with accepted policies and procedures
  • Manage the production of information for input to the PSR process
  • ensure all financial reporting deadlines are met
  • prepare financial management reports
  • ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close
  • resolve accounting discrepancies and irregularities
  • continuous management and support of budget and forecast activities
  • establish processes to monitor schemes including revenue and expenditure trends, financial commitments and future revenues
  • analyse financial information to recommend or develop efficient use of resources and procedures, provide strategic recommendations and maintain solutions to business and financial problems
  • Manage the various VAT processes within the schemes
  • Manage the various PAYE processes within the schemes
  • Ad Hoc financial planning for various scheme needs and outcomes

Education and Experience

  • be qualified to A level or Degree level and a suitable professional Accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, ACMA)
  • knowledge of accepted accounting practices and principles
  • knowledge and experience of Excel applications and appropriate accounting software
  • usually a minimum of 3 years experience in the management of financial systems and budgets, financial reporting, financial data analysis, taxation and providing financial advice
