Position: Mechanical Design Engineer Location: Warrington Type: Long term Contract / Perm Salary/Rate: Flexible DOE I am currently recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer on behalf of our Client, a leading company who specialise in Construction and Civil Engineering. This exciting opportunity will be working within the Water / Utilities Sector. Role: The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the project design output of their engineering discipline. There will be a number of projects that the Design Engineer will work on at any one time; this will involve self management to ensure that all required outputs are achieved on time. The Design Engineer will work in a multi-disciplinary design team environment and will need to communicate effectively with the other design disciplines to ensure an effective overall design output. The post holder will report to the Lead Mechanical Engineer on engineering and professional matters, and to a Design Manager on project-specific matters. The post holder will also be involved in working with suppliers of services and equipment in the development of design solutions, standards and specifications. Key Responsibilities: The Mechanical Design Engineer will carry out but not be limited to the following duties; Design robust technical solutions. Read and understand relevant Client specifications and approval requirements. Understand the budget and target values for the packages of work. Identify technical improvements and cost savings for the work packages. To maintain excellent working relationships with the clients / partners and other potential clients / partners. To work continuously to improve standards of performance and improve efficiency. To fully own, be responsible and accountable for their design output. Also to offer design support throughout the project (i.e. feasibility, outline design, detailed design, construction and commissioning). To support and maintain good communications with all members of the design and project team. Thus ensuring an acceptable multi-disciplinary design output. To develop best value, robust designs solutions which can withstand external challenge. Work within the project plan timescales. To work to the project Design Activity Schedule (produced by the Design Manager) thus ensuring all required design deliverables are completed on time. To understand and communicate the design risk and assumptions associated with the project and support the Design Manager in managing this risk. To record the risks and assumptions as the project progresses. Discuss all design changes and agree an appropriate response. To ensure that the designers responsibilities under CDM are adhered to. To promote good H&S practice and minimise risks to operators / maintainers (e.g. designing out confined spaces and working from heights). To understand the environmental issues associated with the design and to support the Design Manager in managing them through the design process. To work to the Clients Project Delivery System (PDS). To share best practice and good / bad experiences with other designers, the Design Manager, Engineering Manager and Information Manager so that Design Bulletins can be raised as a learning tool for all. Also, to ensure that all Design Bulletins are adhered to. Identify potential improvements to the Clients systems, processes and procedures to the Design Manager and Lead Mechanical Engineer. Examine and evaluate the Project and learn from it. Identify, propose and test innovative ideas. Skills & Requirements A working knowledge of water and/or wastewater and/or sludge treatment Mechanical equipment. A working knowledge is also required of the interfaces with other disciplines e.g. Civil, Hydraulic, Process, Electrical, Modelling etc. The post holder will have thorough knowledge of acceptable general arrangements for Mechanical equipment and the integration of these into building envelopes and site layouts. The post holder will have knowledge of the operational environments, operator skill levels and operating cost implications of the proposed Engineering solutions. The post holder will have knowledge and experience of process and construction risks analysis techniques such as; ARM, HAZOP, HAZCON, HAZCOM and PEAZ Clear understanding of design and engineering interfaces with: construction teams, commissioning teams, supply chain and third parties It is expected that the post holder will be a professional engineer with at least 3 years post-graduate or equivalent experience and hold or be capable of achieving Chartered or equivalent status.
