The role

Our vision is for IT to be a valued business partner, providing innovative services to our students and staff. As a Senior Linux Engineer you will be key in leading a vital service to the University, ensuring key services remain operational and working on projects to deliver innovative new solutions.

You will contribute to the strategic design, development and day to day management of the University Physical and Virtual Server and Storage infrastructure which includes Windows & Linux Server Infrastructure, IBM Storage and Backup, Data centre management, Windows and Linux operating systems and High Performance Computing.

Working with the wider infrastructure team you will help define and implement effective standard, processes and monitoring to ensure the integrity, availability, security and performance of services.

The Person

You will bring to the role extensive, relevant knowledge and experience of IT best practice including:

- Extensive Knowledge of Linux or other UNIX based operating systems
- Experience in scripting/programming languages such as Bash, Perl, & Python
- Understanding of monitoring tools such as Opsview (Nagios), Uptrends, or Solar Winds Virtualisation Manager.
- Experience with automation tools such Puppet, Chef or Ansible
- Experience with patch management tools such as Pulp, SpaceWalk or Satellite
- Good experience with VMWare infrastructure technologies such as DRS, HA and Metro storage clusters
- Knowledge of Server infrastructure technologies including physical and virtual servers
- Knowledge of storage technologies including, SAN, Fibre Channel, iSCSI
- Experience in server architecture, system migrations as well as physical to virtual server migrations (including IP address changes, P2V)
- Self-motivated, with the ability to work under pressure and take ownership of problems
- Some knowledge of GPFS, HPC and associated technologies desirable

- You will be a self-motivated and dynamic individual who is able to challenge and influence others, develop and maintain collaborative working relations across IT and non IT departments;
- High level, proven inter-personal and communication skills are essential, as is the ability to demonstrate the benefits technologies can bring to the user community
