Founded in 1863 this is one of England's oldest and most distinguished Catholic state-funded boys' schools. Girls are admitted into the sixth form. This is an academically successful school that encourages its students to strive for and achieve excellence in all their pursuits.
The School has achieved outstanding results in the public examinations. This has been a challenging year academically with new A levels being introduced in a number of key subjects and the first year of examinations in new GCSEs in English and Mathematics. For GCSE, this is the first year of grading results by 1-9 rather than A*-G. At GCSE 92% of pupils achieved 5 or more GCSEs at grade C or 4 and above, including English and Mathematics. In both Mathematics and English over 95% of grades were at 4 and above. There were many outstanding performances with over 45% of grades at A or 7 and above. Forty-three per cent of pupils gained the equivalent of 5 or more A grades and above.
At A level the school once again achieved excellent results with approximately 25% of pupils achieving 3 A*-A grades and 73% of grades at A*- B. The vast majority of pupils applying to university have already secured places at Russell Group universities, nine of whom have secured places at Oxford or Cambridge.
