Providing advocacy and user involvement services across England, VoiceAbility is a growing organisation working with people who are vulnerable or marginalised to raise their voices and have their rights respected.

Position: Advocates (IMHA)
Location: Guild Lodge, Preston
Job Type: Part Time, Permanent Contract to 31 March 2019
Hours: 22.5 hours per week
Salary: £21,000 - £25,700 pa (pro rata)

About the role:

The Advocate is concerned with the direct provision of technical expertise to strengthen voice, champion rights and change lives of people who may be marginalised or vulnerable. Jobholders would normally report to the Service Manager or Managing Advocate and would be responsible for providing a direct service to gain positive outcomes for people along with wider impacts.


- Deliver a strong outcomes focused service that achieves a high level of positive impact for service users.
- Positively influence and build strong relationships with a range of stakeholders to ensure that impact is achieved for individuals / groups of people they work with both locally and nationally.
- Provide technical and professional information to a range of stakeholders. Be responsible for a range of issues / activities requiring investigation to resolve.
- Contribute to technical planning and have an understanding of the implications of predicted developments within the business discipline.
- Provide feedback to the Service Manager / Managing Advocate to help shape future business strategy and give credibility / strength to VoiceAbility's capability to influence.
- Maintain appropriate records / paperwork in support of an effective and efficient advocacy service.
- Be mindful of the budget set for the provision of the service and operate within the culture of cost awareness / savings / cost control, introducing efficiencies where appropriate.
- Assist the Service Manager / Managing Advocate in developing new relationships and targeting specific work in support of their strategic plan.
- Implement opportunities for innovation, which leads to improved service and performance.

About you:

The ideal candidate will be passionate about supporting people to ensure equality and respect and have a background or understanding of advocacy and experience and / or knowledge of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act alongside local and national safeguarding policies and practice.

Desirable skills or experience:

- IAQ; IAQ with specialisms of IMHA.
- Experience of Advocacy.
- Charity and Third Sector experience.
- Knowledge of the Action for Advocacy Code of Practice, Advocacy Code of Practice.
- Ability to manage change and guide people through change.

You may have experience of the following: Advocate, NHS, Vulnerable Adults, IAQ, Charity, Third Sector, Social Worker, IMCA, DOLS, RPR, Legislation, Policy, Support Worker, Healthcare etc.
