Maintenance Shift Engineer

Job Overview

The maintenance shift engineer is an individual within the engineering department whose primary responsibility is to ensure that all equipment and machinery, runs smoothly and is reliable.

Using a computerised maintenance management system, the engineer must carry out routine maintenance, raise work orders for all types of work completed and self-manage workloads, also developing strategies to improve overall reliability and safety of plant, personnel and any production process

Specific Job Responsibilities

  • All roles within the Operations function are multi-disciplined
  • As a result, the Shift Engineer will be required to partake in other departmental activities to help support the wider team
  • The working hours for this role are based around a two shift system, 6am -2pm, 2pm – 10pm, Monday to Friday, however they are sometimes bespoke to the individual engineer and may change depending on the requirements of the role, any relevant projects being undertaken or to any production re structure.

Specific job responsibilities will vary however, they will generally include

  • Adhering to safety policies and procedures and reporting near misses
  • Carrying out routine maintenance work and responding to and diagnosing equipment faults or breakdowns
  • Fitting new parts and making sure equipment is working correctly
  • Maintaining good engineering practices at all times
  • Liaising with all other departments and production colleagues
  • Controlling maintenance tools, stores and equipment
  • Working with specialist parts such as PLC’s
  • Ensuring there is continuous engineering cover of the machinery and equipment at all times
  • Adhering to hygiene rules and following good housekeeping standards to keep in line with food safety
  • Self-managing own work, completing assigned work orders in the times specified, highlighting any issues or follow on work by raising a work order using the Computerised Maintenance Management System
  • Giving clear, precise and accurate handovers to enable smooth transitions of shift changes and job progression.

  • The suitable candidate should be able to present evidence to the claims of any courses completed

Essential Skills & Qualifications

  • Proficient written, numerical and verbal skills
  • Time served engineer with a recognised apprenticeship qualification of NVQ, BTEC or City and Guilds with electrical bias
  • An industrial or maintenance type electrical qualification is desirable for the maintenance of motors, sensors etc.
  • Good diagnostic and problem solving skills with a good eye for detail
  • Team working skills to work cooperatively and liaise with people at all levels with confidence to respond positively when under pressure.

Desirable Skills & Qualifications

  • Food safety Level 2
  • Previous experience in either Food, Pharmaceutical or FMCG.
