Capel Manor College is London?s only specialist college for natural studies and an internationally renowned learning resource for those interested in Horticulture, Animal Management, Saddlery, Arboriculture, Floristry, Garden Design, Countryside and the Environment.
This is a key post that requires a proactive individual to deliver our Foundation Learning Entry Level 3 programmes. These are aimed at 14-18 year old students who need an additional year within a small group setting before joining one of our mainstream subjects. Our students may have learning difficulties and/or disabilities, emotional/behavioural issues, have few or no qualifications and/or be disengaged with education.
80% of our Foundation Learning students stay at Capel Manor and choose a vocational course the following year. Many become qualified tree surgeons, florists, horticulturalists and animal care practitioners and pursue successful careers in these sectors.
The post works closely with local schools and external agencies. As a Tutor you will carry out a variety of tasks including one to one and group tutorials, monitoring attendance as well as working on Foundation Learning activities and initiatives. You need to be capable of creating a range of learning opportunities, reflect and use different strategies with students and support them to progress to our mainstream subjects the following year.
We are looking for an exceptional teacher with qualities to make a difference to our learners and someone who can deliver a range of land based courses, core skills and employability based courses. We recognize that applicants may not have experience delivering the breadth of subjects we offer and welcome applications from people with different professional backgrounds who can display they have the key competencies listed in the job description. This could include candidates with previous experience in youth work, informal education, social work, Special Educational Needs or environmental awareness.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Teaching qualification (completed or in progress)
- Experience of working in an educational or training environment
- Experience of teaching either horticulture, animal care, core skills, countryside or employability at Entry Level and Level 1
- Experience of working with particularly young learners and those with different learning needs and challenging behaviour
