Job Overview: We are now actively looking to recruit a Design & Development Engineer for a successful plastic injection moulding manufacturer. (Expires 01/03/2018)

Role: As Design & Development Engineer, you will lead, coordinate & support local design & development activities to bring new vehicle products into production. You will be using Catia V5 to create & maintain 3D CAD data & 2D drawings of new & existing parts. In addition the Design & Development Engineer will be liaising with OEM customers, Suppliers, Toolmakers and the Quality Assurance, Engineering, Production and Sales departments and will be constantly striving to develop cost reductions to the company.

The successful candidate will ideally have previous experience within 1st tier automotive and have knowledge of automotive OEM test specifications. You must be able to operate CAD (Catia V5, NX or Solidworks) and should have at least 5 years? experience working in design & development. You must also have some injection moulding design experience & possess a degree in an Engineering/Design discipline.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:


  • To lead, coordinate and support local design and development activities to bring new vehicle products into production
  • To create and maintain and both 3D CAD data and 2D drawings of new and existing parts using Catia V5
  • To liaise with parent company design department via Video Conference, email and presentations
  • To plan, track and report Quality, Cost and Delivery (QCD) of new projects and design changes
  • To drive and develop cost reductions through the company internally and the customer
  • To work within ISOTS 16949 procedures
  • To create and update genetic DFMEA, tolerance stack ups, GD&T and DFM studies
  • Comply with all H&S regulations

Liaise with:

  • Customer OEMS
  • Suppliers and Toolmakers
  • Other members of Design & Development department
  • Quality Assurance department
  • Engineering department
  • Production department
  • Sales & Purchasing department

Health and Safety

  • To ensure all equipment and machinery is correctly used and properly maintained


  • To comply with company hygiene standards and recommend enhancements to improve safety and efficiency of the department
  • To make every effort to conserve power and ensure filing and back-up systems are maintained
  • To wear the uniform and safety wear when appropriate, keeping it clean and tidy at all times


  • To communicate accurately and effectively with all employees as appropriate, in particular parent company Design Department
  • To ensure all required reports are distributed accurately and within correct time period


  • To be prepared to work offsite to support regular meetings with customer at their address
  • To be prepared to visit parent company overseas
  • To visit suppliers in UK and Europe


  • To work to the requirements of the company?s Quality Management System and relevant procedures


  • To understand fully and comply with the security procedures on-site including those governing IT
  • To report any unauthorised personnel seen on the premises, in addition to any incident of damage or theft

Cost Reduction Activities

  • To actively participate and drive cost reduction design solutions

Qualifications (Education and Experience)


  • Bachelor?s degree in Mechanical Engineering / Product Design or related technical field
  • Experience working within the automotive industry.
  • Be able to operate CAD (Catia V5, NX or Solidworks)
  • Have at least 5 years? experience working in design and development
  • Experience of working in a design team in a fast paced environment.
  • Project experience using a stage gate NPD process
  • Experience of design for injection moulding


  • Have intermediate or higher knowledge of Catia V5
  • Have experience of working with Far East
  • Have knowledge of:
  • o Vacuum Forming
  • o Assembly Methods
  • o HF Welding
  • o Modern Production Assembly Methods

Skills and Capabilities (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities)


  • Extensive understanding of FEA, DFMEA, ISIR, GD&T of part/system design
  • Excellent negotiation skills
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Extremely well organised and project orientated
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet critical deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, in addition to being a strong team player. Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Demonstrate ability to represent the company professionally to both customers and suppliers
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptive to internal processes and change, delays or unexpected events
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
  • To be able to travel overseas if necessary
