A Bursar is required for a prestigious private boarding school in Surrey. The Bursar is a member of the senior management team of this small school and the ‘go to’ person for everything other than teaching. This is a rewarding and yet demanding role where the ability to be flexible, adaptable and multi-task is vital. Ideally, applicants should have previous experience of recruitment, HR responsibilities, finance and accounting, commercial and Health and Safety. In addition, the Bursar will preferably have practical skills to carry out basic defect rectification and manage maintenance and repair issues throughout the site. This position would be ideal for someone who has previously worked as an Assistant Bursar or Deputy Bursar. Training will be provided for the successful candidate.

Responsibilities:

  • Finance and accountancy
  • Monitor P and L, reporting regularly to the board
  • Maintain cash flow forecast
  • Overseeing salary and pension contributions for staff
  • Forecasting future finances
  • Income tax and book keeping
  • Ensuring compliance of contracts with employment law
  • Effective monitoring of policies, ensuring they are up to date
  • Health and Safety Manager
  • Ensuring appropriate and up to date insurance cover
  • Monitoring of all equipment ensuring compliant
  • Conduct risk assessments as required
  • Purchase goods and services for day to day running of the school
  • Liaising with outside bodies
  • Point of contact for the DfE
  • Overseeing security
  • Lead induction for new members of staff
  • Monitor school building, coordinating necessary maintenance and repair
  • Supervision and quality control of repairs carried out by a third party
  • Monitoring of bills and identifying ways to save money

Knowledge, skills and qualifications required:

Desirable:

  • Previous experience as a Bursar / in a similar role

Salary: £40,000+

Benefits: Eligible for admin pension scheme (NEST), free lunch during pupils' lunch break

Holidays: 8 weeks a year

Hours: 09.00 to 17.00 with an hour for lunch
