West Lothian Council is one of Scotland's most successful local authorities and is based in Livingston.

Legal Services provides comprehensive legal and committee services to the council and is made up of four teams - Committee Services, Licensing, Litigation, and Property/Planning.

This is a full time permanent post but job share or secondment may be considered.

This is a varied and challenging role as part of a small, busy team. The post holder will be required to assist with the timely provision of a full range of quality legal services to the Council, its committees, members and officers. In particular, they shall provide Employment law advice, support and representation including responding to Employment Tribunal claims, and advising on Human Resource policies and procedures. In addition the post holder will undertake the provision of general litigation advice, support and representation where required. The role includes participation in the development and provision of training to council officers and Elected Members and such other areas of work as may be allocated and required to assist the Chief Solicitor in providing a quality legal service that meets customer expectations. The post may involve clerking regulatory or other committees, and whilst previous experience is desirable, full training will be given.

The post is suitable for and will be of interest to a qualified, enthusiastic and motivated solicitor seeking a position which brings the unique challenges of being an in house legal adviser. The successful candidate will be client focussed and proactive in the identification of issues relevant to council services.

In addition to the technical competencies required the successful candidate will have excellent communication and team working skills. They will deliver advice to team members, council officers and elected members in a clear and concise manner, demonstrate a commitment to excellence in customer service and a flexible approach to meeting changing demands and priorities. They will contribute to and participate in the Council's training programme for colleagues and client services.

The skills and experience you must have:
  • LLB degreePost graduate diploma
  • Membership of the Law Society of Scotland with a current unrestricted Practising Certificate
  • Post-qualifying litigation/employment experience
  • Good written and communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of law relating to a local authority
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • IT experience/aptitude
