We are looking for a Researcher on a two year temporary contract to plan and execute research into materials and device technologies. Research is undertaken with the purpose of obtaining information required to critically evaluate early stage projects in order to recommend whether to proceed with a research programme or otherwise.

This role will deliver technical feasibility experiments and recommendations for these projects and will also generate key Intellectual Property (IP) to support the projects. For existing projects the role has included the preparation of devices for biosensors, charge-storage devices and several technologies based on printed electronics.

Key responsibilities include: planning and implementing experiments, including designing and fabricating test devices to demonstrate proof-of-principle for novel technology areas; communicating plans, status and results; developing creative solutions to identified problems; producing new ideas and IP.


* Devising, planning and implementing a focused series of experiments on material systems and/or functioning test devices to robustly evaluate the feasibility of proposed ideas
* Identification and sourcing of appropriate test materials followed by processing or manipulation by a variety of methods to achieve the required physical and chemical properties
* Development of robust test procedures to characterise the material systems produced and to quantify the performance and stability characteristics, with systematic collection of data from fabricated devices or systems
* Introduction of improvements to the trial systems to resolve key issues that limit performance
* Use of literature and industry references to develop robust theoretical models to support activities and proposals
* Experimental comparison of different material combinations and morphologies to understand how these factors affect device properties
* Compare technical expectations against market requirements and use these, along with competitor benchmarking studies to realistically assess business opportunities
* Identification of market and technical risks to technology development programmes and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies
* Develop opportunities for new IP


* Excellent academic credentials are essential, including a PhD in Materials Science or a Physical science discipline with a strong component of practical manipulation, processing and characterisation of functional materials into different forms and combinations
* Experience of characterising a range of material systems by a variety of techniques is essential
* Experience of working safely with a range of chemicals in a solid or solution-based form is essential
* Experience of using materials in prototype application test structures to demonstrate desired functional properties is essential
* Creative and inventive with a demonstrated aptitude for a broad range of experimental work and with experience of solving complex problems
* Experience in planning and communicating a robust series of experiments to deliver the required targets
* Experience of developing testing procedures, including writing experimental and data acquisition control programmes for new devices would be an advantage
* Self-motivation and ability to operate independently in a laboratory environment
* Excellent team-skills, with the ability to interface and effectively communicate across multiple scientific disciplines
* Experience of identifying ideas suitable for filing patent applications and of supporting this process would be an advantage
* An understanding of the time-critical demands of target-driven industrial research and of working with drive and passion to work towards critical deadlines.
