Our client, a renowned engineering contractor working primarily in the rail sector, is looking for an ambitious Commercial Assistant/Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join there highly motivated team of permanent staff working in their regional office in central Birmingham.

The Commercial Assistant/Assistant Quantity Surveyor will perform the following tasks/duties;

  • Assisting with the commercial management of the business with supervision by the Senior Quantity Surveyor/Commercial Manager.

  • Collate daily site records including labour allocations, plant allocations, material delivery notes and daily site diaries from all project engineers, supervisors etc.

  • Collate the information into a weekly spreadsheet (total labour hours, total plant hours and total materials then input the appropriate rates).

  • Collate weekly productivity sheets from engineers for all business/projects/disciplines (eg, design, installation, testing, commissioning etc) and record into a summary spreadsheet.

  • Produce excel graphs identifying the actual outputs in the week and issue to business commercial team.

  • Collate weekly records of waste from engineers for all businesses/projects and disciplines and record into a summary spreadsheet.

  • Produce Excel graph identifying the actual wastage against budget.

  • In addition to the above, provide any further administration support to the commercial and planning function where required.

  • Preparation, filing and maintaining the Project Commercial Filing System in accordance with the Commercial Manual.

  • Process Subcontract Payment Notices Letters, obtain letter reference numbers and post to Subcontractor.

  • Process payments to Subcontractors via COINS.

  • When required, provide assistance with the production of the Project Reviews.

  • Provide assistance with entering GRN’s onto COINS.

Candidates for the Commercial Assistant/Assistant Quantity Surveyor role will be self-motivated with a pro-active approach and have experience of working under pressure and meeting tight deadlines. Problem solving, communication and good interpersonal skills are a key requirement for this role. The candidate will also ideally have the following experience/skill set;

  • A minimum of 2 A Levels or equivalent ideally one to be in Maths. Studying for a degree or equivalent in Quantity Surveying and working towards chartered would be desirable.

  • A minimum 1 years experience in a commercial or financial environment.

  • Preferably previously worked within or have knowledge of the Rail/Construction or related industry.

  • Computer Literate and be an advanced user of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.

  • Previous experience of using COINS, OnTrack or similar accounting software use would also be an advantage.
